Show ANOTHER CANARD S o Editors Herald But for his imp oper use of my name I should have no interest in the retraction of William J Carney in this mornings HERALD I think it now a duty to myself and to help the gentleman out of ids dilemma to make a simple statement of the facts not wasting time in words The card c All in a Name was ritteu by me at William J Carneys Car-neys earnest solicitation I What private eriefs he had alas I I know not that made him do it But after reading it to him once or twice he approved and told me to append his signature explaining that his hand was disabled so that he could not write He then immediately imme-diately took the MS to your office Shortly after this Mr C said he would like to have me go with him to see General Bane as he wanted to tell him the circumstances under which he had signed the petition for his removal in my presence he o told General Bane that when he signed that petition he had been drinking and was pretty full that Carney George H was treating the boys all round that after a while he pulled a paper out and said < f Here boys want you all to sign this petition for the removal of Bane upon which he Wm J and the rest signed it that he knew nothing of the contents of the petition peti-tion in fact was too full to know much anyhow Now Messrs Editor how does the foregoing comport with the second edition of William J Car ney V Is it not conclusive that if this statement be true he was hoodwinked hood-winked into signing something he 0 knew not what and that this retraction re-traction in which he confesses himself a mere catspaw either of myself or the other man named Carney or both is but the response re-sponse from an alcoholic afflatus and not the doings of any person whomsoever JAMES MACKNIGHT Salt Lake Feb 24 1882 |
