Show After the Sndsidy Roads Washington 23 Van Wyck has introduced in-troduced a bill into the Senate to compel railroads to pay state taxes on unpatented lands donated them by government One provision of land grant charters is that railroads must pay the cost of surveying sur-veying the lands The companies hold land throughout the west which they have not surveyed and patented and courts have held that the state cannot tax these lands because the United States still holds an interest in equity in them by reason of the fact that under the condition con-dition imposed by the grant the lands might revert by government through failure railroads to comply with these conditions It is claimed that the railroads rail-roads have the lands unpatented to avoid taxation ana the VaaYyck bill releases and quit claims to any state that proceeds against these lands for collection of taxes all interest in equity of the general government Ic is thought this will encourage en-courage the state tojcollect these taxes |
