Show i l Dominion legislation Ottawa Canada 29The first party vote of the session took place in the House of Commons last night on a mo tion to go into committee on supply Hon Mr McKenzie moved an amendment amend-ment in which he set forth the facts re fpecting the letting of the contract to Mr Onderdonk of California for the construction of the Port Moody and Emergo Bar section of the Canada Pacific I Pa-cific Railway for 200000 more than Messrs Charlehoig of M roai l offered to perform the work f r 1tj supported the motion h i a brief pointed speech Sir Charles Tupper minister of rail ways did not dry the facts of the case but alleged thu me reason he had not awarded tile contract to Charlebois and McDonald was that he considered they were not in a pecuniary situation to carry out the contract and that one member of the firm had already failed in a con tract u with government Members of both sides the Home joined in the dis cussion which was the most exciting of the session A vote was taken and the amondment negatived 55 yeas to 128 days The House sat till 2 30 |
