Show IIChill Chili and Peril Panama 8 The latest from Peru is to the 28lh of December The American oommis ioners had left Lima for Chili the day after they arrived at Callao There was quite a severe earthquake Great expectations had built upon the arrival these gentlemen by Peruvians I but so far as heard from nothing has yet resulted from their visit and affairs remain in tatu quo It is i not believed Chili will be so rash as to threaten war with the United States A serious rais unaersUnding between the countries is looked upon as probable unless tbe diplomacy diplo-macy or Messrs Trescott and Elaine prove equal to the emergency The Chilians are in bad temper and will require re-quire soothing down The Lima correspondent of the Star and Herald says It was hoped the American diplomatists would give some indication regarding the purpose of their visit to these countries and all awaited a-waited the dread development with anxiety The commission however sailed out Callao Bay on Christmas day bound for Chili and the general sentiment senti-ment of national curiosity was not gra i fied THE CANAL Work on the canal has been almost wholly interrupted for the past week by a general strike among the laborers The price asked is 150 per day They say that the price of rent food clothing etc have advanced so much that it is impossible to live at the old rate of 120 per day besides which it is quite trne that the money used in paying off is at a discount of 20 per cent amounting to only eighty cents on tbe dollar I is bought that the canal railroad And steamship companies might very well afford to restore tbe currency with which they pay their employees to the value of American English or French gold and silver As it is now these great corporations may be accused of taking a rather small advantage of the necessities of the poor laborers I II I I |
