Show TELEGRA1HIO How York Kcpabllcaus Saratoga 20The republican state I committee by a vot9 of 18 to 14 selected exSenator Maden as temporary chairman chair-man of the convention Cornell men voted for Senator Pitts The Cornell Wadsworth people announced that they will fight on the question of temporary organization and in that case the strength of Folger men will be developed The republican state convention was called to order by B Platt Carpenter and the roll of delegates called When the roll was concluded George E Sharpe said the state committee had decided to recommend as temporary chairman E L Madden and he nominated nomi-nated him Warner Miller said he did not think it the province vf the ptnta committee to dictate who shall be temporary chairman chair-man He would not speak of the influences influ-ences that bad brought about this suggestion sug-gestion bnt would nominate Edmund L Pitts and asked for the ayes and nays Sharpe repelled the suggestion that the nomination of Madden had been impelled im-pelled by another reason than those in the interest of harmony and good feeling feel-ing He seconded the motion that the ajea and nays bs called The motion was adopted The vote resulted Madden 2ol Pitts 243 Madden was conducted to the chair and made a brief address Committees were appointed and Hepburn read a communication from the antimonopoly ccmmittee which was rot well received Ac 425 the convention was called to order A communication frjm the Brooklyn young mens republican club was presented by Delegate Tate cf that city for the consideration of the convention conven-tion The delegate said the paper came from 2500 republicans who held no office and were not for sale Chairm The chair would say no republican is ever in the market Applause The committee3 were not ready to report and the convention was kept waiting until 435 when tho committee on contested seats presented its report in favor of the admission of contestants from Kings County Albert Daggett leader of the Cornell men from Brooklyn moved to disagree with the report and said there was not a shadow of reason for the contest con-test If such things are to be done in Kings County it will be impossible to find a decant person to go to a primary or to the polls Daggett demanded the delegation bo given its rights and said the contest was preposterous and absurd If right was not done he promised that while the Kings County republicans would support the ticket whatever what-ever it might be yet in the district in question republicans would refuse to vote and would lot the rag tag and bobtail run the machine Lawson of the committee said Daggetls speech was presented to the committee and thoroughly denied and controverted Gentlemen 1 have had in my long experience ex-perience in New York much to do with frauds at primaries Cheering and laughter that interrupted the speech and cries of question Lawson continued 11 made a little slip of the tongue in leaving out the word iaveatigating fraud but I leave the matter to the convention TQ report was finally agreed to tYCS 248 nays 246 In the case of Senecca County L wson said the committee re commeuded contestants be admitted A member of the committee on credentials creden-tials favored the sitting delegates and said he desired to make a minoity report re-port in their favor A desultory discussion discus-sion followed Question was called and the chairman said it was as to the adop ion of the report of the committee Delegates insistel that a motion to substitute sub-stitute the minority report had been made The chairman said the motion was made too late Great confusion ensued and amid cheero acd hisses the chair said the rules which controlled con-trolled the convention did not provide for the presence of policemen to put down dssorder but they were such as all gentlemen gen-tlemen would obey He then announced that the ayes and nays had been called on the question of the adoption of the report of the committee which re = ulfed ayes 271 nays 272 The chairman then amid applause declared the report of the committee com-mittee rejected The temporary chairman chair-man wa3 then continued as permanent chairman Pitt being defeated for temporary chairman declined the offer of permanent chairmanship The convention rejected the motion for another recess and proceeded to vote for a candidate for governor First ballot resulted as follows Judge Folger 223 Alonzo B Cornell 180 James W Wadsworth 69 John H Starin 19 John C Robinson 6 Necessary to choice 249 |
