and devine The gospels spreading through the land A people to prepare To meet the Lord and Enochs hand Triumphant in the air Prayer by Elder Patrick The choir sang the hymn on page 400 Behold the Lord Redeemer die A broken law to satisfy He dies a sacrifice fjr tin That man may live and glory win ELDER CHARLES W PEN OSE addressed the congregation He said the gospel worshipped by the saints was not one of their own invention in-vention but of one who had revealed re-vealed himself from the heavens People had set up God to worship according to their own ideas of what He is but the saints had received re-ceived information of God from on high The Christians l > od had been invented by man so also was the heathen Gods The heathen did not worship the idol which was a representation of something above and beyond the symbol In this church the God who was worshipped wor-shipped had manifested himself to the people and instructed them in ordinances The saints religion consists of what God had revealed to them and not of what they had formulated The inhabip ants of the earth did not understand the true and livincr God and his purposes and their forms of worship wor-ship were not accepted by the Lord The principles and doctrines received re-ceived by the saints were not new God had revealed himself in past ages and called holy men as he had done in these latter days The Bible contained many of the doctrines doc-trines that had been revealed to the saints in this age The Christian sects take the Bible as their guide to salvationfjand say that what is not written there is not the inspired in-spired word of God The saints find that which God has told them corresponds cor-responds with what is contained in the Bible for he is an unchangeable God and truth is eternal and everlasting ever-lasting being the same in all ages The saints have a living faith a living God a living Scripture and herein comes the difference between be-tween them and the Christian sects While they do not base their faith on the Bible they have more faith in that book than any other people All the truth revealed by God was not contained in the Bible nor held by one people but some could be found among all nations and this spirit had enlightened mankind in all ages and in all countries If all people would be guided by that spirit they would bow but to him who is the fountain of life and light But mankind seems to prefer pre-fer darkness to light They have rejected those whom God baa raised up as his mouthpiece on the earth There were two opposing influences on the earth and the many seemed willing to be led by the influence of darkness God gave to all their agency to choose the light or the darkness the good or the evil His influence was good but he forced nobody to obey it The world had gone into erroneous ideas concerning the Creator and his ways When God < commenced this work the world was in darkness concerning God In1 T r1 n H fnl h H f T JUO JUU1U 1HCUL1JGOICU UJUiaGiJ LU o u seph Smith who was instructed in regard to the things of God and he in time instructed others Joseph Smith was instructed in-structed concering a certain record which was given into his hands and he was able to traslate into I the English language It The Book ot Mormon did not spring from his mind but was revealed by the Lord So with every commandment command-ment doctrine and principle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints The religion was simple sim-ple and within the power of comprehension com-prehension of all persons but in order to comprehend it one must be born again of the word of God when he is able to see and understand the truth He then feels that it is necessary to repent and be bap tized for the remission of sins and have hands laid upon him for the reception of the gift of the Holy Ghost which is a spirit of truth guiding to all truth and leading the obedient back to the presence of the Father This gift is not shown by a physical physi-cal manifestation but a conviction in the heart a testimony within that the gospel was of God a new light an intelligence that made the recipient feel that he was in communion com-munion with God a knowledge that the Redeemer lived Those who had received the Holy Ghost know that God lives and that this Is His work for leading the human family back to him The saints had obtained that life which could be obtained in but one way which had been pointed out by the L ird It could not be obtained through any made religion People wondered at the con dition of the saints their union etc and say the latter are led by crafty men This was because the world did not understand the saints who received their light from God and that this Js his work It was their knowledge of God and hispurposes that made them united There was need of prophets and inspired men and leaders in order that the King dom might be perfect but each person who had the Holy Ghost knew for himself whether these men spoke by the influence of the Holy Spirit I > The man who stands at the head holds the keys of the kingdom but each Individual has I the privilege of knowing for himself the word of the Lord when he hears it In conclusion Elder Penrose exhorted the saints to be faithful in their religion when the Lord would fulfill all that he had promised toils to-ils people The choir sang an anthem and I Elder W W Taylor pronounced the I benediction |
