Show TEE CABLE TKAMWAY The Work to be Bone Next Spring A day or two after the City Council granted franchise to the Secqnd South Street tramway Major Erb its president went to San Francisco to inspect the new I cable roads there and to obtain such additional information in regard to construction and operation as he deemed necessary He returned on Friday of last week In conversation conversa-tion with a HERALD representative yesterday Major Erb stated that these familiar with the business on the coast advise him by no means to attempt the commencement of the work in trosty weather that aside from the slow progress that could be made in the work accident might afterwards result from injury to the mechanical arrangement which might prove seriors lIe has therefore there-fore decided to defer the work till spring It will be remembered that the ordinance conferring franchise allowed nine months from the date of the passage for the completion of the tramway and operating cars thereon If the road is not begun till the frost thoroughly out of the I ground less than six months remain in which to construct the road from the Denver rv Rio Grande depot to Fort Douglas On this point Mr Erb considered it would I be quite an undertaking but was sanguine the work could be done in the time specified Money will do it he said and our stock is all subscribed bonds placed and everything ready to begin Mr Lighthall is now in Washington He will be here in a week or two and then our future plans will be developed I tell you the cable works nicely in San Francisco I have seen the roads operate before in Chicago but the perfect ease with which they run up and down hills at the rate of seven miles an hour was a revelation to me Sometimes Some-times they slow up so that they barely move to allow a team or something to pass and then shoot ahead again at the same speed Obits Ob-its beautiful Here the Majors eye fairly sparkled with enthusiasm In the course of the conversation Major Erb further said that the COSti of the road would be something between be-tween 100000 and 150000 He does not anticipate any trouble about the Lighthall patents ao the patentee had assured him they were genuine and in fcan Fraicisco he had been informed that Mr Light hall was the inventor of many original designs though some of his patents were claimed to bmfringe ments Major Erb has the exclusive right to use the Lighthall patents in Utah Colorado and Montana This little road to the fort is to be an experiment and the success suc-cess attending it win he a basis upon which to found further enterprises enter-prises of the same character The incorporator of the Second South btrett Qable Tramway company com-pany are G S Erb A H Lighthall of San Francisco Allen Fowler Guernsey D Root and V S McCor nick |
