Show Attempted Break Daring Sunday night two of the inmates of the county jail made a deE perato and almost successful attempt to get out Both figured considerably in the public press a short time ago as the burglars that broke into Carters and Hari stores besides going through several places in Og dn before coming here and give their names as Fred Klein and Tnos Molton On Sunday evening when given their cupper both being in the same cell they were ai far ai could be seen by the jailor perfectly safe but on Monday morning when he went in with their breakfast things looked very different During this interval thesa two bad nearly succeeded suc-ceeded in digging through and under toe foundation and making their escape The flags in Ihe southeast corner uf the cell had been raised some weighing as high as 300 pounds and over they then dug down to the bottom of the foundation and removed re-moved some of the foundation rocks and then turned up and when found i in the morning had reached within afoot I a-foot of the surface and bad they known i could probably have forced the ground up and got away Tbo tunnel thus made was about four feet in width and large enough for a couple of men to go through They had piled the rocks and dirt up against the jail door doubtless thinking think-ing that should they be discovered it would tako some time t gain access into the jail and would thus assist them The only instrument found on them to assist them in the work was a small piece of iron and with this and their fingers i is presumed they did the work some idea of their labors may therefor ba had especially as the guard sleeping over head was not disturbed They were shackled and will be kept in separate jails hereafter as this ia not the first time they have tried to escape Fellows taat can do so well at excavating under such difficulties ought to be mighty good at beautifying the streets |
