Show SUNDAY SERVICES I i j At the Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon the choir sang the hymn beginning Come thou glorious day of promise Come und spread tby cheerful roy When the teat eed sheep of Israel Shall no longer go astray When hosannas I With united voice theyll cry Prayer by Elder George Rev 1oldB The choir sang the hymn commencing com-mencing t How great the wisdom and the love That filled the c urts on high And sent the Savior from above To suffer bleed and die PRESIDENT JOHN TAYLOR addressed ad-dressed the congregation He said the saints were disirous of knowing the mind and will of God qnd then obey It had given him some pleas urti during his late travels among the people to find that spirit among the saints The latter had been gathered from the nations under the influences of the new and everlasting ever-lasting gospel and the guidance of the GatLe They call this the Zion and themselves the saints of the Most High To be a saint meens to be pure holy upright and virtuous and they assumed to be FO They came here to learn the laws of God and walk in his ways they profess to be the church of God Sometimes the question occurred to him how neardo they live up to their professions pro-fessions Only he that doeth righteousness is righteous Jesus had commanded his followers not I to love the world nor the things of I the world for if they did so the I love of the Father would not be in I him The saints had been called to I perform a peculiar work in this dispensation dis-pensation of the fullness of time I It was proper that they should try to comprehend all the duties devolving devolv-ing upon them They differ from the world in many respects some times they were apt to be too censorious cen-sorious of the world whereas they were not the judges of the world They are the children of God as were also all the people of the earth who had been ma e of one blood All men had certain claims upon the Heavenly Father who was the God and Father of the spirits of all flesh No matter how wicked men may be they will generally respect I and honor a good and honest and virtuous man Outside of the gospel gos-pel in the different age3 there had been very good influences in the world There bad been men who had striven to know the will of God and do it and put away evil yet there was a great difference between that feeling and what is called in the scriptures the Holy Gbost Luther Melancthon Wesley Knox and others had been anxious to do away with evil and benefit their fellow men but neither of them restored the gospel of Christ nor did they understand tbe scriptures alike Their ideas were confused in regard to doctrines doc-trines and ordinances and such was the case today in the world It is Babylon The reformers were not wicked men They were benefactors bene-factors of mankind and did good When Jesus came there were various vari-ous sects and systems of religion and they were told that there was but one faith one God who was above all The fact that there weie many systems in the world which were unlike puzzled Joseph Smith and he prayed to the Lord to know which was right and was told that none of them was right All were groping in the dark desiring to do I good so far as they knew but they i couldnot come to a knowledge of God I without the gospel Now the saints I of God in every agehad had light and I revelation from God and in this con I slated the difference between them and the would Anciently Christ told I those who asked what they should do to be saved that they should I repent and be baptized for the remission re-mission of sin and they should receive re-ceive the gift of the Holy Ghost Certain signs were to follow those who believed and accepted the gospel as the Savior taught it to his disciples Those who received the spirit of the Holy Ghost were also to be lei into all truth to be made to see and comprehend alike and to be made acquainted with things PaSt and things to come The same promise is made to the world today by the elders who preach the gospel The saints in this day were toM to go forth and proclaim the gospel to all the world as the saints had iieou commanded in former days And they were obeying the command hundreds of the elders being engaged in the missionary field They go forth in the name of Israels God to proclaim pro-claim the words of life eternal and they return rejoicing bringing their sheaves with them They were diligent dili-gent earnest and faithful and they were not responsible whether the message they bore was received rejected by those to whom it was presented Jfhe elders performed their duty and the result was left in the hands of the Lord The saints were building up the Zion the Kingdom the Church of God and He would be their instructor and guide in the work There were people here from many of the nations na-tions of the world and they were united by the spirit of the Lord all being one in Christi They were trying to do good to introduce honesty hon-esty virtue and uprightness in the world They injured no one in that effort They were under the guidance guid-ance of the Lord who could do no wrong If they were to deny the instructions of the Lord and make shipwreck of their faith they would be the veriest fools but if they obeyed those instructions their reward would full for they were heirs ef God joint heirs with Jesus Christ and would inherit life eternal eter-nal President Taylor spoke briefly I of the marriage system of the saints with which the world persisted in interfering He I asked if the world could show a better system and answered in the negative The saints marriages were for time and eternity while those of the world were only for time The saints would have their wives and children in the future existence but with others the family relations ceased with death |
