James would accept the position sition if tendered and that the President Presi-dent had his appointment under very favorable consideration The mineral land bill agreed upon at the meeting of the Pacific Coast delegation last night was introduced in tbe House today by Belford and referred to the committee on mines and mining There is not much prospect ot its obtaining final action at the hands of either house or Congress Con-gress this session but there is good reason to believe that no other proposition propo-sition affecting mining interests can be passed in preference to this measure meas-ure Representative Horace Davis will next Monday introduce a bill author zing a portion of some island in Ban Francisco Bay to be used by the city authorities for quarantine purpo > He i hog written to the secretary r f I war on the subject and it is probable thatAngel Island will be a ignatod as the most suitable location for the quarantine station Tne conference committee on the appears to be increasing daily and there is i no Ivan undoubted possibility that the session may terminate at the time indicated Of course if this programme is carried out all business busi-ness except the appropriation bill will go to tho board There is now hardly any probability that the io funding bill can be passed It maybe may-be that the House will get a little I tariff bill through but there is small chance that it will pa s the Senate There remains yet to be disposed dis-posed of by the House three appropriation appro-priation bills vis The legislative executive and judicial the sundry and civil and the general l deficiency bills The legislative bill will be reported early next week the river and harbor bill has already been reported and will doubtlcjs be passed as usual without debate under a suspension of the rules On the other band there area are-a number of prominent members ol both houses who hold that an adjournment ad-journment as early ao the 1st of June is practicallly out of the question and it is evident that almost any obstacle that may be interposed in the present swift running currant of legislation would be sufficient to delay the n1 journmeni till after the assemblage of the republican national convention in which event the session is likely to extend at least to the middle of June and quite probably until tho 1st of JulyTho gfr The results of the several ate conventions con-ventions held yesterday are the subjects sub-jects of much comment among Washington politicians t > day The Blaine men generally feel elated over them and claim that their favorite favor-ite was forced ahead considerably They now claim that with the aid i f tho New Hampshire dele atioo headed by Wm E Chandler Bhiuc will have forty of New Englands eighty solid votes or more than double what he had in 1876 Tnoy claim also that be will have Maryland Mary-land Delaware and New Jersey solid and that when the tug of war cjmes in the convention they will have nearly all of the Wisconsin votes Grant men however claim a considerable con-siderable portion of the Maryland and Wisconsin Vutes but being chagrined at their failure to secure a solid Vl tin t-in Tennessee and unmistakably uneasy un-easy at the formiJnble revolt of the unit rule in Pennsylvania and New York they still predict that Grant will be nominated on the first ballet Tc frienda of Sherman also prefer great confidence in the ultimate success ol their candidate They argue that neither Grant nor Blame can be nominated on the first babt t and count on a combination being then effected against Blaine of which Sherman is accordiug to their ca1 cillation to be tbe beneficiare Ds passionate observers generally continue con-tinue to believe that Illinois id the key to tho situation and that until the 19h inst the final result will be wholly problematical Diametsrically opposite opinions are Expresstd by democratic congressmen congress-men as to the probable future action of the Ohio delegation in tbe case it shall become epparen that Thurnan has no chance for the Cincinnati nomination Thurman and his intimate inti-mate friends are earnestly opposed to Tilden but it is predicted by some congressmen well acquainted with the personnel of the Ohio delegation that tbe majority when Tburman is i out of the question will vote for Tildeu II |
