Show Give the Mormons a Rest Under the above caption the Chicago Herald of the 14th inst contains the following which our readers will recognize is from the pen of Mr Fuller formerly editor of this journal To the Editor of the Herald SirI agree with you that the republican re-publican party should either drop the antipolygamy plank from its platform or enforce the law that has been declared constitutional by the courts But why should the press unite in abuse of the Mormons because be-cause they are carrying out the American < principle of promoting I ernkrrilion from Europe cultivate the deserts and waste places of the west and are aiding in the settlement settle-ment of the country The Utah community has added millions of dollars of solid wealth to the nation and comprises a people that for industry in-dustry sobriety and morality except ex-cept in one particular are not excelled ex-celled the world over Instead of the constant abuse they encounter from press and pulpit they should have a voteof thanks for what they have accomplished toward American Ameri-can civilization Of coprse if as you seem to think the existence of the Mormon church is a menace to our institutions I agree with you that stern measures should be adopted ad-opted to suppress it But have we any eyidence to this effect Until positive danger becomes apparent it would be well not to excite ourselves unduly on the subject If the practice prac-tice of polygamy is popular in Utah and my knowledge ot the people of that territory leads me to believe it is notit will be very difficult diffi-cult to suppress it if it is unpopular unpop-ular it will die away without outside out-side interference In any event it is not likely to find advocates Ll Illinois If editors would only remember re-member that persecution of believers believ-ers of < any doctrine often inspires persistency in their faiththey would give the Mormons a rest for a time ENF |
