Show SUNDAY SERVICES At the Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon the choir sang the hymn beginning To him who made the world The sun the moon and state And all that in them is With dllYs and months and years To Him who died That we might live Our thanks and songs We freely give Prayer by Elder John Morgan The choir saug the hymn on page 156O O God the Eternal Father Who dwells amid the skj PRESIDENT WOODRUFF addressed i the congregation He said there were few changes in the worM in re erd to belief in the ISibk There may be some who still believe in the old and new testaments bun if so they were few The Latterday Saints still believed implicently in both those testaments He said he bad covenated with the Lord that whatever he would give him he would give to the people All were dependent upon God no one being able to edify except by the dictates of the Holy Spirit By that power the elders had been able I to gather the saints in these mountains I moun-tains Anciently holy men spoke as they were moved upon by the Holy Ghost just as Daniel did in the interpretation of the dream It was in fulfillment of that prophecy or interpretation that the saints were here today If this were not the work of God the people would not be here today and Utah would be as barren as in 47 when the pioneers arrived in these valleys It was surprising to him that the word had strayed so far from the teachings of the Bible God had in fulfillment of the Bible and Book of Mormon raised up a great nation on this continent It had been brought about in Gods way in order that he might establish his kingdom It was strange that the Christian world had no idea that God was going to fulfill the prophecies of the Bible yet the saints were engaged in fulfilling ful-filling those prophecies before the eyes of the whole world They were preaching the gospel of Christ which had been again restored to the earth It is the same gospel as that which Christ had preached and would continue the same to the end ot time Since the days of Christ no church had taught the gospel as it was taught in the New Teata mpnt TQn ministers nr rfifr > rmprii had been called r God to preach that gospel Luther Calvin and others were instruments in the hands of the Lord for performing a certain work but they were not prophets nor were they directed to preach the gospel of Christ In this generation God had called Joseph Smith to preach his gospel and gave him the keys of the kingdom king-dom With the direction of God and his angels the church had been organized or-ganized after the pattern of the church of Christ with prophets apostles inspired men etc Everything Every-thing had been done by the power of the eternal priesthood and in no age had any man been called to administer ad-minister in any of the ordinances of Christ without that priesthood Joseph Jo-seph Smith had received both the Aaronic andMelchesede priesthoods and all the keys of the kingdom belonging to this dispensation and when he conferred these upon other men he was called to the spirit world The elders held those priesthoods and under them were preaching the gospel to the people of the ewth and performing the work that had been assigned to them The world was arrayed against them and the work in which they were engaged but the kingdom as David had prophesied could not be stayed It would be like the stone cut out of the mountain which would eventually fill the whole earth No power could stay its progress No greater prophet than Joseph Smith had ever lived on the I earth since Jesus Christ The saints need have no fears concerning what the world might do God rules the destinies of nations in this land and when men make war upon the church they make war upon God That nation kingdom that makes war upon the church of Christ would certainly be ground in pieces God will flctit the battles of this people all the latter had to do was to be faithful to the covenants they had made In this was their strength They would not have to take up the sword and stain their hands with the blood of their fellow man but God would bring down his judgments upon the children of men who fought against his kingdom President WOODRUFF exhorted the saints faithful to the espel covenants cov-enants they had made when God would fulfill all the promises that He had made to those who obeyed himELDER J STODDARD who had recently re-cently returned from a foreign mission mis-sion addressed the congregation briefly bearing testimony to his knowledge of the truth of the gospel as revealed through Joseph Smith ELDER JOHN MORGAN was the last speaker of the afternoon His discourse was in the line of that of President Woodruff concerning the prophecies in the Bible and Book of Mormon and their fulfillment He quoted from Isaiah foretelling of the Kingdom of God to be set up in the last days and maintains that geographically otherwise this is the Zion referred to by the ancient prophet The ohoir sang an anthem and Elder P P Pratt pronounced the benediction |
