Show TELEGRAPHIC TRANSCONTINENTAL TRAF FIt Indications ol a Freight War New York 30The weather haa con tinued to be unfavorable for outdoor business and the river and harbor are full of floating tee and an consequence there is very little doing at tho wharves of California vessels The market how ever has a strong undertone and with the advent of more pleasant weather it is probable there will be more doing notwithstanding the fact that the season ii well advanced Charles E Moody is loading a ship and will finish this weak Bates are vary firm at the lad quota tions and the indications are for an advance in consequence of the scarcity of ships available for this trade Railroad freight are improving now that the time to meet the early spring trade has arrived and the movement ii already quite large Heretofore tho bulk of shipments has been via the Union Pacific but the activity of the managers Qn of tie Atchison Topeka and uauis 1O ana ooutnern Pacific roads and the fact that freights are delivered at points on the Pacific in several days less time has turned the tide and now r the movements are more equally divided with the prospect in a short time that the latter route will be the most popular The fact is that for a long time past there has been great dissatisfaction at the arbitrary manner in which shippers and others have been treated by the Union Pacific and great hag been the desire to give them the go by The opportunity has arrived I and from this time forward their propor tion of through freight will be loss As is well known the local traffic of the Central Pacific is well established while the southern route has but very little therefore in order not to interfere with the former it has been thought beat to use the latter road for through business and to this end certain arrangements have been made that will insure it The Chicago Burlington and Quincy Wa bash Chicago and Alton and Rock Is land roads have completed their system to Kansas City there connecting with the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe and Southern Pacific The Missouri Pacific road has connection with the Chicago and Texas Pacific also for the southern pads while the latter has its own lines to New Orleans and Galveston Gal-veston and thence to New York by steamer if desired and in this connection itisseTMofficially announce that the Southern Pacific are negotiating for the purchase of Morgan line of steamer also that the Central Pacific have notified the Union Pacific of a de sire to sever their connection so far as freight traffic is concerned In view of this change in the future movement of freight the California fast freight line which heretofore cooperated exclusively with the Union Pacific has issued a cr culnr announcing that it will hereafter receive and forward to the Pacific Coast freight via the Union Pacific Atchison tc Topeka and Santa Fe and Texas Pacific roads as per instructions of shippers It is also announced that E Hawley genera gen-era eastern agent of the California Fast Freight Line has resigned to accept the general agency of the Galveston Harris burg and San Antonia and Southern Pacific roads with headquarters at this city |
