Show FOOLISH YEARS In view of toe possible and probable prob-able death of President Garfield sorm of the newspapers are predicting dire things wuen Mr Arhur becam PrfQident Tbey say he is nothing but a politician and that he will b merely the tool of Ruscoe Con klivK who will be the rfal ruler of the country coun-try I would be serving both politi cal parties right and might prove a moat valuable lesson tj them if Arthur Ar-thur were to develop into a chief executive of whom everybody would be ashamed In that case it migh teach the parties to nominate no more men far VioePre ident who could not safely be trusted witb the presidency It is almost invariably the case that the VicePresident is not chosen because be-cause of any special fitness for office but merely on account of his money or ability to carry his state at the polls It is a bad practice and always fraught with danger to the party and the country Had Bill English gone into the presidential office aa Arthur is likely to do what democrat would have failed to hang his head for shame But in the case of Arthur we believe the country will be most agreeably disappointed He is not the nincompoop that some newspapers would infer nor is he a corruptionist in any sense of the term It is true he is a trained politician but not a dishonest one nor by any means shallowbrained He is a successful business man and whenever when-ever he has held office he has performed per-formed his duties faithfully intelligently in-telligently and honestly The intimation intima-tion that Conkling will be the power behind the throne is not a reflection upon the character of Arthur nor is such a hint indicative danger to the country What abler or better adviser could a President have than one of the ablest and most honest statesmen of the nation as Conkling unquestionably unques-tionably is i Where is his peer in the republican party Mr Garfield constitutional advisers may all be honest and faithful but they are political po-litical and intellectual 1 pigmies as compared with the imperious giant ol New York If Mr Arthur should placa himself in the hands of Conk ling doing as the latter l says President Presi-dent Arthur would come out of the White House at the close of his term with a record and reputation for statesmanship that it would be difficult diffi-cult to surpass by any republican The greatest danger from Arthur becoming President is not that he will lessen the dignity of the office or do anything that will bring the country into contempt but that he will not be permitted to serve during the term There are more crazy men in this country than are confined in the Washington jail and there are some of them who are not stalwarts The danger lies in the fact that thu assassination assas-sination ol presidents will prove a disease that is catching If Quit Lean thought he was doing good service ser-vice for the political faction to which he belonged it is highly probable there will arise other assassins who think they can best serve party and country by killing Arthur In this there will be danger but in no other way Personally Mr Arthur will be placed in a position where no man who values his life can possibly envy him Politically cia path is marked out more clearly than that of any previous President had been |
