The President remains quite as comfortable as at the date of the last bulletin He takes his nourishment nourish-ment well Pulse 100 temperature 997 respiration 23 Signed D W BLISS J BARNES J J WOODWARD ROBT REYBURN Executive Mansion 1255 pm The slight rise in the pulse of the President since the official bulletin of S30 am is caused by the changing of the bed and the movement of the patients body which it necessitated His symptoms are still regarded as very favorable Executive Mansion 1 pm Unless Un-less some unfavorable change should occur no further official bulletins will be issued until 830 pm Experiments Ex-periments are now being made under un-der the supervision of physicians with different sorts of refrigerating apparatus in order to relieve the President if possible from the unfavorable un-favorable influence of the great heat artificially cooling the atmosphere of his room Executive Mansion 230 pm The Presidents condition at this hour remains unchanged all rumors to the contrary notwithstanding Executive Mansion 130 pm Among the more favorable symptoms symp-toms of the Presidents condition today is th3 fact that he is beginning begin-ning to find fault with his physicians physi-cians because they do not give him enough to eat He called this afternoon after-noon for a beefsteak but upon being told he was not able to eat beef and it was thought prudent at present not to allow him to eat much hearty food he grumbled a little but consented con-sented to compromise upon an egg and say no more about it The egg was then given him He wished also to know this afternoonwhether he could not be permitted to hold a cabinet meeting meet-ing and evinced generally a disposition dispo-sition to talk which his physicians were obliged to discourage and restrain re-strain The symptoms at this hour continue to be favorable Executive Mansion 530 pm Dr Bliss says the Presidents condition condi-tion and symptoms at this hour are favorable and satisfactory Executive Mansion 830 pm The Presidents condition continues as favorable as at the last report He passed a very comfortable day taking more nourishment than yesterday yes-terday Pulse 101 temperature respiration 23 Unless unfavorable symptoms develop no futher bulletin bulle-tin will be issued until tomorrow morning Unofficial Executive Mansion 10 pmOnly a slight change has taken place in the Presidents condition since the date of the last official bul letin and that is in the direction of further improvement He is now resting quietly Unofficial Executive Mansion midnight The President has passed a most comfortable day and his condition con-dition tonight is in every way as satisfactory isfactory as could be expected Hems He-ms taken more nourishment during the past eighteen hours than at any time since he was wounded and the food has all been retained and has perfectly assimilated In order to relieve as far as possible from the oppression caused by the intense heat the attending physicians this afternoon put into operation a single refrigerating apparatus appara-tus which it is thought will render the atmosphere of his room tomorrow much more comfortable than it has been today It consists of a number of troughs of galvan I ized iron about ten inches in width and fourteen feet in length placed on the floor along the walls and filled with water and broken ice Over these troughs and corresponding correspond-ing with them in length are suspended sus-pended sheets of flannel the lower edges of which are immersed in the ice water which fills the trough The water is absorbed and carried upwards by capilliary attraction in the flannel as with oil through a wick in the lamp until the sheets are saturated This cold water both by direct contact with the air and by the rapid evaporation which takes place over the extended sur face of the flannels lowers the tem perature of the room Although only a few hours have elapsed since the apparatus was put into opera tion it has made a perceptible change and it is thought its utility will be still more clearly demon strated tomorrow Unofficial Executive Mansion 1 am The President is resting quietly as are also his physicians and attendants Everybody about the Executive Mansion is a great deal encouraged The last bulletin was issued at 1 oclock It shows the pulse was 100 temperature 997 respiration J3 This is an increase of two beats in the pulse but the doctors do not consider it as any bad showing They attribute it to the heat of the weather and say that all favorable symptoms continue The President has continued to rest easily this morning and to steadily improve and the doctors say that every minute min-ute that he continues to get along as he has since yesterday a morning greatly increases his chances of final recovery Some fear was expressed of gangrene in the wound but surgeons sur-geons do not apprehend this They say that there is not a single symp tom of gangrene yet and if gangrene had set in it would show itself by unmistakeable signs The President still has appetite and his stomach re tains nourishment Today there is every hope of his recovery City doctors who have not seen the Presi dent but are kept professionally in formed now generally agree that the chances are good Even those who yesterday thought he could not recover now agree that the signs are in his fayor The lowering pulse is pronounced the best sign The quarrel that the doctors had over the case continues to cause comment Some favor Bliss course and others condemn him SurgeonGeneral Barnes says the condition is much improved The case is still involved in hidden dangers dan-gers because the course of the ball and nature of the wound are unknown un-known but he feels hopeful of recovery re-covery He has not been hopeful before and has predicted death |
