| Show TELEGRAPHIC W I1INGTON Washington 7The House ccmmit tee on mines and mining being called for report today Berry reported the joint resolution heretofore agreed upon by the committee which provides fr the appointment of a commission of two civil oncinoers and ono officer of the coast survey to investigate the debris question and appropriates 250000 to bo forthwith expended under the directions of the secretary of war far the promotion promo-tion of navigation by California steamers from injury by loosened debris now in tho mountain gorges The House committee on naval affairs will next Monday take up the documents docu-ments received from Secretary Thompson Thomp-son somo time ago exhibiting the extent ex-tent to which the Mare Island navy yard approaches have been shaded and will thereupon address themselves to tho determination de-termination of the question of what should bo done about it California representatives representa-tives in the House aro invited to be present pres-ent at this meeting as it will undoubtedly lead to important general inquiries con cerning the mining debris question They will all therefore attend it Representative Willis of Kentucky last Friday wroto to Secretary Evarts that ho intended to offer a resolution in tho House calling attention to tho fact i that tho President had made no response to tho resolution of February 25th by which ho was requested to furnish information infor-mation if not incompatible with the public pub-lic interest as to what progress had been mado in the matter of tho negotiation negotia-tion with China for a modification of the Burlingamo treaty Secretary Evans instead of replying to this letter in the usual manner called upon Mr Willis pertonally and requested him to withhold his resolution lor a few days and said that tho matter would be attended at-tended to Willis according waited till yesterday and then again wroto to Secretary Sec-retary varta stating that ho would bo obliged by his sense of public duty to offer tho resolution without further delay unless positively assured that the House inquiry of February 12th woud be answered very soon This last communication communi-cation today elicited from Mr Evarts an official letter to Mr Willis raying an answer was being prepared and will be sent to the House or Representatives without delay Willis being still dissatisfied dis-satisfied with the vagueness cf the phrase without d layr then icquired what limit of tuna it was intended to indicate and Evorts finally promised I hat the anw r which will bo in the form of a message from the Presid nt shall be sent in during the present week An amendment to tho army appropriation appropri-ation bill was offered by Representative Harv White and atlontnd tn nuthnohn tho President on the request of any incorporated in-corporated coil go to detail an army officer from tho retired list to act as superintendent or professor thereof This amendment attains the object which Pago had in view for the benefit of the California Califor-nia University the amendment which he proposed yesterday but which the adoption of Whites amendment now renders unnecessary General Garflod is being urged to allow his name to be moo as a district delegate to tho Ohio state convention which is to meet on tho 28th instant nt Columbus It is represented to Garfield that should ho decline there is danger that a Elaine delegation wili be chosen The ditrict in which General Garfield resides is in the western reserve of Ohio where the Blano feeling is thO stronsrast Col Harrison Gray Otis formerly of this city acd later of the Santa Barbara I < fee Press and now superintendent of ho Alaska fur seal fisheries who has been > m Washington for several weeks past goes to tho Pacific Coast tomorrow preparatory to hs annual visit to the seal islands I |
