brick and great attention has been paid to making all the constituent elements of the structure harmonize harmon-ize in the direction of completeness and eleerance It was commenced I on the 5th of July last since which time a large force of men have been busily engaged and the work has been pushed with an energy and attention to details such as are characteristic of the great west The structure consists of three stories and a basement The latter is where the steam generator for heating the building throughout is fixed it will also be used as a storage stor-age place for unboxed merchandise of all kinds The first floor of the general salesroom in which will be kept the details pertaining to a music store stringed and wind instruments in-struments furnishings for all kinds of musical a different kind of music all plainly I labeled so that whatever maybe may-be wanted can be found at once without wasting time and patience in huntin over miscellaneous mis-cellaneous masses The counters are absolutely the finest most elaborate and attractive in the western country and are themselves them-selves worth goirg to see The second sec-ond story is the piano and organ room which James and the heating generator gen-erator and appliances were put in by Mdgley Son In each and every one of these departments of labor and skill there is manifest the greatest ability of workmanship and attention to details the aggregated aggre-gated labors of the workmen arti zans and artists making up a scene as delightful to look upon as it must be gratifying to possess The general gen-eral verdict that Calders is one of the prettiest and most attractive buildings perhaps the most so of any in the city and this means the Territory and a long ways beyond it in every direction Mr Calder first commenced business busi-ness here as a music dealer in 1860 his stock at the beginning being extremely ex-tremely limited Prior to this by several years however Le taught music and was always an enthusiastic enthusias-tic advocate of the divine art From humble beginning his stock and trade have increased step by step and in a ratio corresponding with the growth of the country until today to-day he appears before his patrons and the general public in the most elaborate commodious and elegant establishment of the kind on the whole Pacific Coast indeed we very mcch question if its superior could be found in Chicago or even New York A mere glance will convince any one capable of forming form-ing judgment at all on such subjects sub-jects that it would be impossible to have every detail either as to ornament orna-ment use or space more fully and completely established than is the case in this fine building There was a large crowd present at the opening which took place shortly after 6 oclock Pedersons Opera House band was in attendance I attend-ance and played among other things I a march composed especially for the occasion entitled Progression the verdict of the listeners being that it was a success and likely to receive popular favor elsewhere It should here be stated that Mr D C Young is the architect who drew the plans for the building and he and his wife were among the many callers at the ooeniug yesterday evening His work is at once a satisfaction to the proprietor pro-prietor and a credit to himself In common with the vast number of friends of our wcrthy townsman we congratulate him upon tIle completion com-pletion of a structure which is the result of years of patience i etsever ance and labor and wlucn will be a conspicuous tribute to his worth and works while living a monument mon-ument to his memory in the years to come |
