Show THE SORCERER SALT LAKE CITY March 18 80 Editors Herald The Sorcerer came but has gone fIr the present in a mysterious sort of a way He was not half a bad fellow He was more harmful than he meant He buildsd worse than be knew Yet he freely atoned for his blunders and for the evil he did not mean to do but did do I was very well satisfied with the I opera Not going with the expectation of seeing a company of professionals I was not disappointed Going to see a company of amateurs f was agreeably surprised They did far better than I expected they would do and I think they deserve great commendation com-mendation for the comparative excellence of the performance The acting the singing the grouping was all better taan L anticipated So that I felt well repaid re-paid for my time spent in the Theatre hat night the last of tbe performances perform-ances but I hope it will not be the last Practice will improve Persistent Per-sistent careful intelligent practice will give aptness and ease to the actors act-ors and enable the singers to learn bow to handle their voices so as to properly fill the house with their melody and harmony I may say there is one thing seldom sel-dom seen on the stage seldom I eeen with a stock company anu still more seldom if ever 03n with amateurs That one thing is good graceful dancing It is not often seen outside of a professional ballet company Considering that the community has been a dancing one from the time oi the pioneers one would naturally think that we ought to see some good dancing on the fctige by local performers even amateurs Not I heavy stilted flat fot3d or stumpy I heel dancing Not square straight up and down jumping like tae btamps in a quartz mill But light elastic toe dancing with an easy graceful springiness in every movement move-ment However i we cant boast of our exquisite dancing we may be pardonably proud that Salt Lake rejoices in three local amateur comic I opera companiesthe Philharmonic Z M S and the Juvenile I perceive by the dispatches in the HERALD that a Boston manager being moved thereto by the devil has boldly unscrupulously knowingly and with malice aforethought pirated the Pirates of Penzanee right before the eyes and noses of the authors thereof Inasmuch SB lthe receiver is as bad as the thief every Theatre manager in the country should absolutely refuse the pirated Pirates admission upon his boards on any terms until the pirate has made adequate satisfaction to the despoiled authors and thus demon strata to al the world that i there are thieves and robbers in the land this is not a nation of thieves and robbers yet That pirate ought to be compelled to take a pretty stifJ jorum of tea of that marvellously powerful sorl brewed by the vicar and then follow the Sorcerer into folow flames and sulphur it matters not with whom or where while honest people join in the jovial chorus I Now to the banquet we press Now for the eggs and the ham Now for the mustard and cress muetar Now for the strawberry jam Now for the tea of our host Now for the rollicking bun Now for the muffin and toast Now for the gay Sally Lunn ALEXIS |
