Show I Silver and the JosepLites I SALT LAKE CITY April 28 1880 I Editors Herald Ii it not passing strange that the very few of our very good and extremely ex-tremely pious men and women of the Josephite faction here should at different dif-ferent times and iu divers ways exhibit EO much uneasiness at anything any-thing that I or some one else havo or might have to say not exactly favorable favor-able to their cause It would almot appear that they like many others cannot withstand the truth I this be so they had belter and at once give up their pretentious to divine assistance and superiority over other factions of religionhti and unite I themselves wita their Metbcdist friends or some like sect whose pretentious pre-tentious to superiority aud divinity are not quite EO much marked I hope that I shall not be considered egotistical if I remind them that taeir favorite Apostle Paul on a certain occasion being of opinion that his brother Peter on a subject of some mportance viz circumciesion was altogether wrong said in addressing the saints of Galatia When Peter was come to Antioch 1 withstood him to the face I happened the other day a gentlemen a Mormon cailed in to see me in course of couvena tion tao subject of discussion which had just before taken place a Sandy between E Brown of the Utah church and Joai ph LuLl of the reorganized re-organized church came up Being somewhat curious to Low which ol the two gen lameD got worsted in the debate I onquired of my friend i he knew When he informed me that > R Brown took the natives by surprise sur-prise that is he Brown displayed so much knowledge and good bound sense that he met Brother LuQ his I opponent at every point and came oft victorious U3 per the opinion of many present and whose judgment was considered unbiased I seems that Lulls constant repetition on that occasion was not relished very well by the thinking minds And this is what comes cf confining ones self to books books Now i came to pass that I rehearsed the above to some of my Irienda which got to the ears of eome ot tho Josephites why they said oE me ho knows every thing thereby indirectly admitting the fact of Brother Browns victory over Brother ther Lufl But Sirs it does not by any manner of means follow on the say so of one or more of the Josepbilea that I do know everything every-thing I very willingly confess however how-ever that it is just possible that I know a little too much for them Now in order to pleisa their vanity I will say not being present at tho above mentioned discussion I do not know positively which of she gentlemen gentle-men Brother Lufi or Brother Brown obtained the laurel There cannot howover be any barm in tae seeking or obUnmg and imparting information informa-tion and certainly in doing so I should not Jbo accounted crazy by any one There are a great many things I do not know Amonf others I cannot say that I know the Joseph ite Church to be the true Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints Ah abll eay they the Josephite fanatics neither can you unless you obey our gospel which is the gospel of Christ But I must inform them that many have done this and foind to the contrary viz bogus I could here give a number of names who were once very cares and faithful members of the aforesaid church who in course of time discovered discov-ered that they were in the wrong pew Bore of whom have returned to the old ohip or churcti from which I they had wandered in the vain search of finding greener pasture etc with the Josopbitea Just here I will cite one case in particular that occurred 5u this city of a gentleman pretty well educated ed-ucated who had traveled and preached Mormonism for many years in van ous parts of Europe he sought a change became a member of the Jojephite body and soon rose to be a presiding elder here and for a time was very zealous in the reorganized church On one occasion he came to me stated tint he had been dreaming dream-ing of me and felt euro he would have to baplizo mo He soon afterwards after-wards renounced Jceephitbm as farcical farc-ical Just one more case and I have done During tho late conference an elderly gentleman informed me that in thq eastern staten he united himself him-self with the Jesephitea and remained vrivh them for three y ars camo out to Utah to find that ha had been deceived de-ceived renounced Josephitism and joined the Morruons here He PS prtesod himself in this wise The gospel is like a net cast into the sea it gathers ol ail kinds And hero said he I found the saying of Jews verified J SILVEII |
