Show TELEGRAPHIC U FIRE RECORD Burning of the Pittsburg Exposition Exposi-tion Building Great Destruction of Property Other Blazes Pittsburjr 3The magnificent building of the Piltsburg Exposition society on the north bank of the Allegheny river was totally destroyed The immense structures with their almost endless variety of exhibit illustra ive of every branch of art > science end mechanical kill which were yeste day visited by thousands of people and since the open ing on September 6th by hundreds o f thousands 13 now a miniature macs of splintered and powdered embars and tangled iron Tha destruction is complete com-plete The fire was first discovered at 2 oclock this morning in the boiler room attached to machinery hall at the south end of the building and before the watchman watch-man could give an alarm the flames had spread to floral ball machinery hall and the main building and in lets than ten minutes the buildings were on fire from end to end and when the fire department arrived on the gi ounds the flames were beyond control No thing could be Bayed and the firemen turned their attention to saving the ad jaoent property many residences on the Avenue being in flames By hard work however they succeeded in saving all o f these with no more damage done than tbo burning ot fences and cornices Be peated alarms soon aroused the entire population of the two cities and it i is estimated that not less than 75000 to 100000 people witnessed the conflagra tion The reflection from the flames il luminated the country for miles around making possible the reading read-ing of the finest newspaper print The origin of the fire is unknown It is i estimated the loss will reach 1000000 Secretary Teller plaes the value of the buildings destroyed at 150000 the insurance in-surance being 10000 Exhibitors will sustain a logs of about 800 000 It is i eprobable the heaviest loss was sustained by the destruction of the relic department depart-ment The cash v lne of articles contained con-tained therein did not exceed 10 000 but many cannot be replaced In the annex was the cc Arabian the first locomotive ever run in the United States that was also destroyed In the safe was 6000 in cash the receipts from yesterdays admissions and Levys gold ecrnetsafe has been taken The main building was 600 feet long and 160 wide Machinery hall was 400 feet long and 150 wide The other buildings were small London 2A promenade of the Tel El Kebir burned today during the fire in Bellevue gardens Manchester The fire was paused by the accidental discharge dis-charge of rockets There was considerable consider-able alarm among the spectators especially espe-cially as the panorama was near the cages of wild beasts No person was injured Damage by fire 30000 |
