time Conkling has control of the republican repub-lican majority He telegraphed to Arthur to come to New York and meet him tonight Arthur announced to the Senate that he was going at any rate so the Senate considerately adjourned to enable Conkling and his able staff I in New York to prepare corns new plan to discomfit the Administration enemy A delegation from Raleigh consisting of Judge Tourgee and others waited on the President and urged the appointment I of James U Edwards a colored citizen of North Carolina to a consulate with preference for Liberia While writing at her desk Mrs Senator Sen-ator Logan fainted away from an attack of vertigo New York 8A Tribune reporter in trvlewed Jones who said 1 came to New York in response to a telegram to attend to loma business in connection with the Hudson River tunnel and shall return to Washington today I do not know Robertson very well having only met him onco during the convention in Obicigo and I certainly would not do such a thins as to undertake to influence his withdrawal or to work against his confirmation The rumor that such Is my business is entirely erroneous Tribunes Washington Conkling is reported as having recently described tbe situation in the following expressive sentence sen-tence The President has placed me in a situation where I must committ suicide or murder and I have chosen murder Washington 8 Senator Fair left Washington last night for St Louis on private business During his absence about ten dare he is paired with his colleague col-league Jones Teller and Maxey paired for the remainder of the session and left Washington for Colorado and Texas respectively The pair of Senator Ed munds who is still in Florida has been transferred to Senator Garland who has gone home and is not expected bacK the present session Democrats and republicans alike declare de-clare they do not intend to abandon their position in the Senate Two hundred and sixtyfive nomination await actim and five treaties It is stated that there is some probability that republicans will go into executive cession to confirm the most important nominations some time next week but should an attempt be made to select certain men for confirmation confirma-tion democrats would probably resist and insist upon taking up the nominations in proper order Judge Tourgee author of A Fools Errand seems to control the federal nat ronago in North Carolina He got the President to withdraw exGovernor Haldens name for postmaster at Raleigh and name Nicole an excon federate friend North Carolina objects to this interference Tourgee being a Senators who put in an appearance ap-pearance at the Capital today had not much to say in regard to tbe existing deadlock in the Senate except that they saw no signs of a break Tne democrat declared that their tide is more firmly united and determined than ever and republicans also say tbere is no change whatever in their programme The recent speeches leading senators on both sides having i hHoi tnn t I ft P hio uuw ouu u u uuuu u u contest upon the election of the next United States senator from Virginia It becomes of interest to note that an election for municipal and county officers il i to be held in Virginia early next month and as the results of this election are expected to largely influence tbe fall election for governor and members of the legislature there is a manifest incentive to both parties in the Senate to procrastinate pro-crastinate the present contest beyond tbe May election rather than acsept defeat on the pending issue previously even if it be perceived ty either sde to be inevitable soon afterward The general belief in outside circles however is that the deadlock will be broken in someway some-way within the next ten or twelve days and as a defection of even half of their number would not prevent the remainder of democratic senators from successfully filibustering against the election of thc repUblican re-publican candidates while on the other hand the republicans cannot possibly elect them or defeat the msUntly renewed re-newed motions to go into executive session ses-sion except by maintaining an absolute unbroken front it is the prevalent opinion that the accumulating public pressure for the transaction of executive business will effect a break at first but soon afterwards after-wards irreparable on the republican side |
