Show Deborah The Opera Housa was well filled last evening the crowd being enthusiastic en-thusiastic and intent on extending a graceful welcome to one of the greatest of modem actresses Madame Ma-dame Janauachek To simply praise this lady would be idle she occupies occu-pies a position in the drama to which praise comes as natural as breezes to the valleys and the applause ap-plause that is bestowed upon her performance is merely the spontaneous spon-taneous tribute elicited by genius from those who admire it As it Deborah Janauschek transcends tran-scends the character itself She makes it greater than the author does Even in places where she has little to do her innate intensity is felt by the audience and they are held as in the toils of a spell from first to last whenever she is on the stage Her support is good but not of course equal to herself she is the bright particular star and in her presence all others dwindle and fade The terrific curse scene in the fourth act drew repeated rounds of applause and the lady was called before the curtain In consequence of the washout on the Denver and Rio Grande Janauschek is delayed here and will by request appear again this evening The play will be II Mother and Son in which she is preeminently pre-eminently great |
