Show THE HIBALD Yesterday closed the eleventh year of the existence of the SAL LAZE HERALD Today it enters upon its twelfth year and volume The event is made the occasion of some very marked changes in the paper The first is the adoption of the quarto form which shape the leading papers of the country have already assumed blanket or are fast taking The sheets are everywhere being done away with and the pages reduced to shapeyconvenient size handling We believe we are justified in feeling a degree of pride in the appearance of this sheet which it certainly one of the prettiest and most ebaply newspapers in the country east or west Tne quarto daily is a new departure de-parture in the far weal where with one or two exceptions the old etyJe fourpage sheets are clung to with a tenacity that reflects no credit uporii the publishers tastes and shows they 1 have little regard for the comfort of their readers One reason tor adopting adopt-ing the new shape was aa will be inferred in-ferred from the above to furnish a newspaper that will be more convenient conve-nient to the readers and prettier in appearance generally This we think has been satisfactorily accomplished ac-complished Another and a chief cause for the change was the imperative demand for more room For weeks pant the HERALD has been unable to meet the exactions of its advertising patrons and at the same time publish BB much news and general reading matter as was i desirable We have tried to overcome over-come the difficulty by the issue of frequent twopage and doablesheet supplements but these were not entirely en-tirely satisfactory J3y the enlargement enlarge-ment several columns have been gained which will enable ua to greatly increase i the news matter published and still do justice to advertisers The extra space could no have been obtained had the fourpage sheet been retained without making the paper a mammoth ungainly affair awkward to handle and altogether unshapely in appearance Beauty and symmetry have both been preserved pre-served and the desired object of increased in-creased space been attained there The-re K ular daily edition of the HERALD wilt be eight pages of six columns each but on Sundays we will as heretofore issue in addition four qix or eight pages The extra sheet this morning consists of six pages making in all eightyfour columns the whole being a newspaper of which salt Lake may feel proud We i question if there is another city in the country of qnly 21000 inhabitants that indulges in a newspaper that is more metropotjtaa in appearance or which is a better index to the business and prosperity of the place Ordinarily the HERALD might be expected ex-pected on the anniversary of its birth to say something of its past achievements and future purposes and prospects but we refrain merely presenting the paper which speaks for itself The history of the HERALD ia eo well known that it is not necessary neces-sary to point to its successful and I honorable past nor make any promises prom-ises asto the future It may merely be said that most of those who were in at the birth are with it yet They have walohed > nd trained the plant i from the seed If anyone desires to know whftnjer the tree is firmly rooted and thriving he has only to look at the paper and its crowded col umni or ask of its thousands friends and patrons all over the country |
