Show A Refutation SALT LsE CITY May 20 81 Editors Herald Inasmuch n my character has been assailed through the colums of I the Tribune by persons who have been discharged for incompetency and misdemeanor would you oblige me by stating that the reports respecting re-specting the unsafe condition of the spectg te unsae engines i entirely untrue Of course all things wear out and need renewing which is done by the best of workmen and material at a vast expense to the railroad company A regards the engine whose flues I burst and scalded the fireman it was i I coming into the shop as per arrangement arrange-ment upon her return trip Flues of locomotives frequently burst but seldom fortunately with any accident acci-dent to persons and with no more serious consequences than the delay The report of the Tribune says that twentyeight or thirty flues burst There were only five out of the 143 flues that were found defective defec-tive when taken out I four of them defective brazing was the cause of failure only one being collapsed Engine No 2 U S RR s perfectly reliable many of her flues having been removed and her boiler cleaned during the month of Ipril 1881 Engine 123 between Engne he months of April and November I 880 was in the shops and had her 4 > oiler entirely dissected was repaired re-paired with new fire box new throat beet new smoke box new tube plate in smoke box end entire now I lays four inches apart around there the-re box besides other general repairs re-pairs and I can say that there are ao safer engines running on any s ailroad in the United States than hose running on the U C U Sad e S-ad USR 11 E lines I They have all had complete overhauling over-hauling within recent date having from two to four engines dissecting and undergoing thorough repairs all the time during the last three years the time I have occupied the position of master mechanic on the U C R R Yours respectfully W B ARMSTRONG M Y |
