Show J BLOOD And the Colored Troops Fought Nobly About 1143 oclock on Sunday morning the vicinity of the Elephant Ele-phant corner was alive with bullets A trouble took place between a couple of individuals of very colored col-ored persuasion i which one shot four or five times at the other and either missed him altogether or struck him on the head a he escaped caped unhurt so far a the bullets are concerned The facts are hardly comatable for the reason that there are so may conflicting stories one attributing the cause of the row to a white woman another t a money affair and a third t a different source The parties to the row are one Pond Dexterhunt and William I ONeal and from the story of the latter the row took place a follows Dexterhunt was standing in front of his bootblack stand Second South street when OVNeal came along Dexterhunt stopped ONeal and asked him why he had told certain stories about him D OXeal denied de-nied having done so when Dexter hunt called him a Cfl dd liar or a blackhearted sn of a b hand I h-and ONeal good naturedly returned the compliment epithets included and turning went his way rejoicing going west The first thing he next heard was a pistol shot and a bullet whistling past his head and turning to see whence the bullet and sound proceeded beheld Dexterhunt running run-ning alter him pistol in hand DKeal also began making tracks but the villain still pursued him at a distance of about four feet and feet kept firing his pistol at the flying shadow ONeal The latter kept dodging the bullets a he says and was evidently successfuland stooped t pick up a rock to defend himself The exciting race both foot and coloredcontinued until the pursuing pursu-ing villain had shot four times at the fleetfooted ONeal when the latter turned the Elephant Ele-phant corner going north immediately thereafter Dexter hunt came armed also and was about to fire a fifth time or did snap his pistol within a few inches of ON ears head but the latter fearing Dexterhunts aim might be a unreliable reliable a it had been before and fearing the ball might miss his head and strike him in some place where it would penetrate instead struck the pistol up with one fist and struck Dexterhunt under the chin with the other They grappled and fell Dexterhunt under when he got one of ONes fingers in his mouth and chawed it with marked relish Meantime 0Neal was engaged en-gaged in the innocent pastime of trying to gouge out Dexterhunts eye And the colored troops fought nobly The combatants white with rage to put it figuratively were separated rated and Dexterhunt marched off to jail ONeal interested himself in getting a doctor to put the chawed linger in as good a condition a possible On Monday Dexterhunt was taken before Judge Pyper and bound over in 500 to await the action of the grand jury He failed to give the bonds and is still in jail |
