Show I The Lingards The irorldfamed Lingardfl and I their company are under engagement engage-ment to perform at the Theatre on Friday and Saturday evenings next and on Saturday afternoon when The Tutor or Stolen Kisses t a new I comeuy now approacning its aoui performance at the Criterion Thea tr London under the title of Betsy will bo presented The box otc will be open for the sale of reserved seats which will be sold without extra charge on Thursday morning I is almost needless to say anything about the Lingards for they a well known here but following from an exchange will give some idea of the piece and its rendition by the Lingards Originally produced in Paris some three years ago under the title of Bebe played by Jefferson at the California a Baby produced in London at the Criterion Theatre ns Betsy and now approaching its five hundredth night there The same comedy entitled The Tutor served last night to reintroduce the Lingards i to a crowded audience at thiS tneatre Even were the play not partially remembered by our theatregoing public there would be no need to recount the story of this amusing trifle Of plot there is none and the interest centres around the escapades indulged in by a grownup youth whom his patents will persist in calling and treating as a baby and the shape taken 1mm those escapades by a knowing servantgirl named Betsy and a tutor of rather lax morals named Placid Dawkins The diameter of Betsy is taken by Alice Lin gardrand is played with great quietness quiet-ness but with a evident appreciation appreci-ation of tho proper conduct of a young woman whose conduct is not quite proper Lingard assumes the role of the tutor and by his droll halfvailed venality affords much fun and shows a marked improvement improve-ment in his manner as a comcdian The character of Dolly Bechs the baby is in the hands of Charles Overton who has been associated with Lingard in Australia and that pi Mr Paul Bechs his father is in those of Charles Maubrey also of the Lmgard company Both are efficient and pleasing actors the first an intelligent juvenile the second clever in the assumption of a character part in which by makeup make-up gesture and voice a distinct and welldefined out conception is carried |
