Show DAKOTA Dakota is holding a constitutional convention preparatory to another I demand next winter for admission to the Union as a state She has been snubbed and refused so many times that a disposition prevails among not a few of the people to perfect the state organization elect officers and proceed with the government govern-ment regardless of Congressional action in the premises It is hoped no such foolish action will be taken for the conduct would be regarded as bordering upon rebellion and as such delay indefinitely the admission admis-sion of the Territory Under republican repub-lican rule it has come to be a settled fact that the government power over the territories is very nearly supreme It makes little difference whether or not the principle is republican re-publican = It has become a rule or part of government and there is little or no prospect of changing it during the existence of the few remaining territories The present dependencies will have to submit to the regular order of things be it whatever it may Centralization imperialism or anything else it may please people to call it Dakota has reached a period in her growth and development when she is in every way entitled to the privilege of statehood She is abundantly qualified in the matters both of population and natural resources for selfgovernment In the ordinary course of things her dependent condition cannot continue con-tinue longer than a year or two Congress itself will be glad to get rid of the Territory and throw her upon her own resources thereby saving to the national treasury the expense of a territorial government govern-ment The Dakoteans need have little anxiety concerning their emancipation eman-cipation We only wish that Utah was as near to statehood as Dakota With daylight so close at hand the darkness could be endured without complaint |
