Show LoDIaVILLT ElEKTCCCY the himQ of Governor Murray is Warming up over the discussion of the Cannon Campbell certificate matter The V CourierJournal continues its defense of Murray but at the expense of its honor and honesty Democratic papers are savagely criticising Mr i Henry Watterson and his conduct furnishes fun for republican journals which to not beeitate to say that hia inconsistent course argues corruption It looks cs if before the end course Governor Murray would wish that he had never seen Utah and theCburter I Journal would be glad to pet itself right with the public On the 25th a telegram from Louisville appeared V in the New York Times of which the S V following is a copy The Washington correspondent of the JouricrJoumal telegraphs the views of Kentucky congres mon on the Cannon Campbell controversy in which they assert I as-sert that Governor Murrays conduct was I without precedent entirely unnecessary and outrageous Messrs Chalmers and Young and some cther southern mem bers are of tho same opinion Governor V Murray is now hero having returned V from the Chicago press banquet with Mr Wattcrson He is dining with old friend and rarely misses a chance to put in a sharp critichm of the Mormons Agent Leman who affects to know inside facts declares that the impression is gaining ground that the new hostility against the Mormons is stimulated by a number of gentlemen in Utah who are aware of the valuable mineral deposits in districts owned by the Mormoni and who areseek ing to drive them off thus forcing their property into the market that it may be bought at a sacrifice The zeal of the CourierJournal in defending Governor Murray has strengthened tho impression which even the populaity and character of the Governor has been unable to overcome over-come Tho Louisville Jbsf exposed the i S absurdity of Governor Murrays action in the Cannon case taking tbe ground that the question was purely a legal one that under the Constitution Congress alone had the right to judge of the quali fications of its members has not parted with this right and that even the law limits the power of the Goveraor by providing pro-viding that he shall give tho certificate to tho person having the hizhest number of votes etc The JPost charges that tho CourierJournal is either corrupt or crazy and owing to Murrays pro = enco a large degree of discussion is provoked by the controversy |
