street west said street being now below the level of the irrigating ditches in the vicinity which despite the great care taken to keep them free and unobstructed overflow the street and make it almost impassable for vehicles and foot passenger Received Re-ceived prayer granted and supervisor super-visor of streets instructed to perform per-form the work asked for in the order of business James Hilton and ten others petitioned pe-titioned to have filled up a deep and dangerous gulley situated on Second South street between Tenth and Ehventh East streets Received prayer granted and supervisor instructed in-structed to perform the labor in order or-der of business May 8 Gemmill made application for license to sell Tinous spirituous and fermented liquors at their place of business No 64 First South street for a term of three months from June 19th 1881 with the understanding un-derstanding that any redaction or benefit enjoyed by other liquor dealers since the late decision of the Third District Court shall be granted also to them License granted Mr L W Hardy by permission arose and stated that at a public mass meeting of citizens held in front of the County Court House on this Tuesday evening for the purpose pur-pose of considering the propriety of having a public celebration of the coming Fourth of July Hon George Q Cannon H B Clawson Esq and himself were appointed to wait upon the Mayor and City Council of the city and petition them for the use and occupancy of a portion of the Mill Farm recently purchased by the city for a park upon which to celebrate the anniversary of the nations na-tions birthday Hon George Q Cannon who entered at this juncture junc-ture addressed a few words in advocacy ad-vocacy of the celebration and stated that if the Council would grant the citizens the privilege of assembling at the place referred to upon that occasion oc-casion he was sure it would be esteemed as a favor and be appreciated appreci-ated bv the citizens oarticiuatincr in the celebration On motion the petition pe-tition was received and the prayer thereof granted whereupon the gentlemen gen-tlemen of the Citizens Committee after thanking the Council for the courtesy extended withdrew Hill t Hopwood by petition asked in view of the forthcoming celebration at Mill Farm by the citizens of Salt Lake City that they be allowed to erect a stall and sell temperance drinks ice cream etc on that occasion subject to the control con-trol of the Council Referred to the mayor and marshal The city auditor submitted his quarterly report of the financial excess ex-cess of expenditure appropriated The superintendent of waterworks water-works made his quarterly report showing that the work ordered by the Council had been performed and the tanks at the mouth of City Creek Canyon repaired and placed in good condition The total number num-ber of services furnished to water I consumers for the quarter were twentyfive costing 56064 or an average of 2242 each Total expenditure expen-diture on waterworks account 81 i 35261 appropriation during quarter quar-ter 1000 leaving the amount to be appropriated in order to balance the waterworks account 35261 The superintendent had the satisfation to report that everything pertaining pertain-ing to the waterworks and service was in good condition and working order Referred to the committee on waterworks The city poundkeeper rendered a report of his doing for the quarter named which showed that twenty five animals had been impounded three of which being unclaimed after due advertisement were sold Amount received by pounkkeeper for fees andforage 3670 amount paid for hay and advertising estrays 850 Amount realized by pound keeper 2820 Amount received on three animals sold 3150 expenses on animals sold 1420 Balance paid city treasurer 1730 Report referred to the committee on finance The following report was submitted sub-mitted Your committee on construction of Jordan and Salt Lake City Canal beg to report that there has been expended ex-pended on account of excavation bridges flumes timber lumber freight on lumber right of way engineering en-gineering etc during the month ending May 31st 1881 the sum of 862923 as shown by the accompanying accom-panying vouchers numbered from 896 to 986 both numbers inclusive F t r 1 The water is now running in the canal and emptying into Big Cottonwood Cotton-wood Creek The excavation is completed to Kanyon Creek and as soon as the flume and chute for the drop near Caspers are completed the water will be turned into that portion between Big Cottonwood and Kanyon Creeks The canal from Kanyon Creek to the city is completed except a distance of about 100 rods through a portion of which the right of way could not be secured except at a price which the committee in justice to the Corporation Cor-poration could not pay and proceedings to condemn said land have been commenced in the Third District Court Unless some unforseen delay occurs your committee com-mittee cannot now see why the the water through the canal should not reach the city and be used for irrigation purposes by the latter part of July Respectfully FERAMORZ works accounts to be drawn upon the orders of the superintendent super-intendent thereof The sum of S 1000 was appropriated appropri-ated to road and street account to be drawn upon the orders of the
