Show OSE OF the peculiarities of the anti Mormon raider and particularly I those of relicijus pretentious and proespionp is tber proneness to take I ap disreputable clarartn and make much of them so long ai they will say anything against the Mormons The Christian church Ihsfc baa taken up the cudgtt against Mormonism will welcome to its pulpit unmitigated i fraud liars thieves and prostitutes and pit and flatter them cheering i their utterances and give them money for saying hard things about the Utah people We can call to mind numerous numer-ous instances where women of vile character and men without character have gate from Utah and been taken to the bosom of Alleged Christian ministers and feasted and petted at the expense of the church for standing I stand-ing up and publicly slandering Mormons Mor-mons and Mormonism The Rev Dr Talmage of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Taber-nacle ia one of the preachers who is making a bobby of his antagonism to the Mormon church and he ia therefore there-fore ready to tike to his arms any unclean thing that will say a bad word against the Mormons He has lately found something to his liking in the person of one William Jarman a disreputable character who recently left Utah for the purpose of engaging in the crusades against the Utah people Hereabouts for yens the ordinarily circumspect person has been eo careful about his reputation at to avoid so far as possible all association with this man Jarman But in Brooklyn Mr Talmage takes him up and introduces him to his flock as something to be admired and believed in On the evening of the 19th instant Jarman addressed a crowded audience in the Talmage Tabernacle A hue canvas screen was stretched in front of the great organ As Talmage and his protege stepped on the platform the latter was carrying an armful of books i newspaper bows arrows and manuscript manu-script Dr Talmage in introducing Jarman said the latter had visited every city and town in Utah under the guise of a mappeddler He had made explorations in Utah on purpose to expose it and be is going to tell the story in all the English speaking countries of the world Tbe subject of Jarmans lecture is Mormonism Uncovered and the New York Times one of the most reliable re-liable newspapers on the continent devotes nearly a column to a description descrip-tion of the lecturerd manner and appearance ap-pearance and a report of his tirade We extract liberally from the Times report in order that the people here may understand what kind of a figure tho fellow Jarman is cutting in the world under the patronage of the religious re-ligious gymnast ofBrooklyn Tho lecturer stepped to the front and the Tabernacle was stilL He carried in tan bund a pair gloves and everybody wondered what he was jroiiig to do with them Nobody imagined thcgloves wore to take part in a grand oratorical drama I am gui g said the lecturer to andla this subject without cloves and he dashed the gloves recklessly upon a chair Ihe H that escaped from him in that opening sentence rolld away so far that he did not recover it again all the evening ahd it soon became evident that ho was jut the mm to go through Utah in the guise of a mappeddler for he would neci no diguie whatever to make the character a success The only thing that needed explanation was his coming to New York under the guise of a lecturer He murdered the Queens English in the most shocking style for nearly two h urs and then gave an exhibition ex-hibition of pictures that would not pass muster as advertisements for a Bowery museum Of all the surprises the Tabernacle Taber-nacle has ever turned out this was the greatest His first half hour was given to a denunciation polygamy in which one or two puny facts were drowned in a briny tea of polysyllabic adjective Then he gave a brief account of Mormon dom from which the following statements state-ments were gleaned Only a few of Mr Jarmans little peculiarities of speech such as brethering childring and his unkind use of the letter Haitcb have been allowed to stand a piquant source for what might otherwise be a tasteless mealMlormoniam Mormonism said Mr Jarman is tho greatest monster of tho Bite It has not one redeeming feature An unclean man with six wives sits in the halls of Congress and legislates for tho nation I intend to take n pledge into every aha ch in America pledging the church ignorant antiMormon type and a pretended account of the Endowment House ceremonies After Af-ter concluding this portion of his senseless and slanderous assault The speaker gave a harrowing account of the Mountain Meadew massacre Holding up one of his arrow he asked I a What ball I say of the vounsr pirl IB years of age from whose body tnu harrow har-row was taken Ark he continued is that the voice collection of daubs ever put upon an American audience audi-ence They looked like charcoal sketches drawn by blind men It was a rare gHery of art gone mad and the lecturer catalogued the pictures wondering where in the I world this man came from and when he would stop for it was an exhibition that would have made most churches weep but the Tabernacle stood it without aj i groan Tbe TabanncJo in its foundation founda-tion would thrive amazingly while such men as Jarman only proclaimed against it It ought to be regarded as a good system that could excite the enmity of the felbw who turned the Brooklyn Tabernacle into a show house on the evening of the 19b |
