subscribed the Bum of 220 the same to be refunded in future Uqe water assessments The communication communica-tion was received and the additions amount subscribed accepted acepe Mr B K Thomas presented a patition setting forth that should the Council decide to grant the petition of Louis Reggel and other reuaenU of the Sarauth Ward requesting an extension of the cur water works one and a balf blocks west along Fifth South street ho woud respectfully petition that the extension be con tinned at the same time from the corner of Fifth South street fitteeu rods north on First West street to his own property and to anist in tt e improvement im-provement desired subscribed 125 with the proviso that the sum be credited to him and allowed back according to the usual custom Laid on the table A petition was read signed by Mar ler Brothers and sixty others residents resi-dents pf Commercial street and vicinity vicin-ity calling the attention of the Council to the very bad condition of undersigned citizens and taxpayers of the City of Salt Lake would peclfully urge upon your honorable body propriety of adopting the electric 1gist 1 lighting our streets according to ths tb proposition now pond ing lVhilo its greater economy must be apparent effecting a saving in five years a we understand it of 36000 there is another and still greater advantage advant-age that must not be lost fight of At present there are but five miles of streets lighted by gas and thee to insufficiently a to maka an inadequate illumination Citizens living on streets off from the gas I mains have no light whatever although thy pay taxes to support the general Eupprt lighting We find that there Jgbt Dg fd are about ninety miles of streets in Salt Lake City and we arc informed that at least sixty miles of street would tecelve some benefit from the electric light According to tho proposition submitted fully twenty miles of streets are guaranteed to b Jignlea more than four times as well as by > a P and the remainder re-mainder of the streets proportionately Since the projectors do not ask tho city to assume any risk wo do cot think and would respectfully suggest it to your honorably body that the fact that the electric light is a new thing in Utah should weigh in your decision upon 1 question of such grot and imnudiao importance to the city And your petitioners will over pray W B bye to whom was referred the petition of 0 J Gastavesan for the privilege of erecting a platform across the water ditch in front cf biB premises on Second Sec-ond lath street for tbe display of prize harness eta for six days from October 6th 1880 reported that they SaW no good reason why the prayer of the petitioner should not be granted a the platform would only be tempo rary and could do no injustice to pub iio or private right The committee therefore recommended that the psti 500 be granted Adopted The city attorney who eas recently instructed to cubmit to tbe Council the draft of a deed conveying con-veying the block in the thud municipal ward known aa Union Square from the city t the University of J esert under tbe con ditioni and restrictions desired by tbe Council made a from Little Cottonwood t this ciy wIth tbo upper route an eitimltb of which latter had Bin nd been submitted to the Council The lower route was the one adopted and partially excavated by the Deseret Irrigation and Navigation Naviga-tion Canal Company and is generally gener-ally known as the Old Cnurcb Canal The upper rate is one surveyed sur-veyed and laid cut forty feet higher than tbe formpr
