It marked the author as the great genius ge-nius and it is presumed that the warm welcome accoided to it m this country encouraged the publishers to issue i the present volume The chief poem in the boot is one worthy of a place by itelt It is a paraphrase from the Sanskrit ol the Indian Song ofEonca of Jayadera the Hin doo poet who wrote in the twelfth century It is n pastoral drama in which ardent lore pictures are numerous nu-merous and the versification is entrancingly en-trancingly melodious The fervid Oriental imagination has been allowed al-lowed full liberty to eotr and although tis impoisiblt to retain all the glow and warmth that mud belong to the poem in tbe original eo faithful ba been Mr Arnold that in the English dress we hate a more delicious taste ol Indian song and Indian imagina ion aa well as Oriental description of the passions and their workings The reader is not obliged to pronounce pro-nounce tbe titles of the cantos hence that is i not an obstacle in the way ol the full enjoyment of the melody Besides the Song ot Songs there ire in the volume several of Mr Arnolds Indian poems all possess ing more or less merit and interest There are also many
