Show UTAH EASTERN l Fact Figures and Fancies on an Investment for the Masses How to Get Cheap Coal and BuildUp Build-Up the Country Something Interest to A gentleman prominently identified Kith the Utah Eastern Railroad and one of its most earnest and consistent advocates in conversation with a HERALD reporter gave vent to some sound ideas regarding the benefits to be derived from the completion of the road and its wisdom an a popular investment The substance ol thin conversation on a matter of such public interest is well worth giving Regarding the matter of a mlroad fight with the Union PAcific be said such an idea was erroneous There could be no fight We have in this territory east fields ol excellent coal and as a matter of public good and for the best interest of the territory we should use that in preference to bringing it from adjoining territories Instead of giving employment to Chinamen or even white men outside out-side of Utah work in coal mines should be given to citizens here to person who have come to live and to build up the interests of Utah then the money now paid for labor war from here would be retained in the I territory and would be distributed among our own o tizeno and would contribute to the wealth of all instead in-stead of contributing as now to the wealth of others who have no interest in-terest in i Utah and her people excepting so far as tbe amount of money they can get out ol her and her citizens Just carryout carry-out in ever res nee the nlan now pursued with regard t our coal and bring I our flourvegetables clothes boots and shoes and other necessaries of life from the adjoining states and territories and how long would we exist Such a thing would be the worst kind of idiotic suicide and i dp injurious as a whole it is proportionately propor-tionately injurious in part The interests of a country are best sub served by the production of aa many things a possible in as many direc lions when such variety of produc ions is consistent with the natural advantages of the country I mean that we should raise a much wheat u many potatoes and produce as much precious metal and coal as possible but that it would be absurd to attempt t rasa tea coQee and other articles to the cultivation of which our climate and natural 1 ad vantages are totally unsuited Now we have plenty of coal good coal here nnd i 13 a suicidal policy not to produce and to consume it Were the Union Pacific not interested in coalmines coal-mines of its own or were willing to give us the advantages to which in real justice we are entitled we could work our mines and supply this city and vicinity with a much cheaper and fully as good an article of coal as that which is now sold here I may say a better article than has been sold here of late But tbe U P naturally i gives precedence to its own interestc and arranges matters so that it is not profitable to work our coalfields and thus forces us to take what they choose to give us a a very exorbitant rate Legally this is all right and we are not fighting on account of i But we hBve an opportunity to make coal cheaper and to develop our mines at the tame time this opportunity is I through tbe Utah Eastern railroad and because we propose to take advantage ad-vantage of this opportunity and to profit by it even though i may be to the divtdvxntage of the U P does it follow tht we are making a fight The idea ia i simply absurd 1 is a matter mat-ter of selfpreservation and the peo pie are foolish i they do not take ad vautnce of it Ouo share of stock valued at 50 I purchased by every person in this county who consumes five ton of cool in the year would build tbe Utah Erttteru to this city and equip the road Now the question is Would this be a profitable investment to these coil consumers I argue that it would Tboee who object to the road as a financial investment do so on the ground tha as soon as the Utah Eastern is completed to this city tbe Union Pacific will lower tbe price of its coal and that at whatever figure we can afford to sell it will pay them to sell still lower The efiect of this will be t turn tbe tide of trade in favor of the Union Pacific for people as a rule always buy where they can purchase the cheapest and the result would be the necessity of a suspension of operations on the Utah Eastern East-ern Admitting this to be tbe fact the Utah Eastern would still be a good popular investment As it now stands we pay fS per ton for good coal I the Utah Eastern wore completed to this city good coal could be purchased for 5 per ton 3 per ton leas Now the m8n who purchases pur-chases one share of Utah Eastern stock and pays 50 for the same while it might never pay him a dividend divi-dend would still be making a good financial investment and for this reason He burns five tons of coal per year for which at the present rate he part 40 wth tho Utah Eastern completed he gets the same for 2 a saving of15 a year Money saved ia money gained you understand and on his investment of 50 he makes in one year 15 Why e successful lottery man could not ark anything better than that But further In the first year he eels his coal I and 15 back of tbe original investment Ho then has but 35 invested In the second year ho gets his coal and another an-other 15 of the original investment back or a saving ot 15 on 35 He then has but 2 invested in he third year ho gets back another 15 on an Investment of 20 he saves in the fourth year 15 aain on an investment in-vestment of 5 and by that time be has 1 his money back and 10 besides while in the remaining years he keeps getting the same amount of coal and is 15 ahead every year assuming that he uses only five tons per annum and bo still has his 50 invested in the road and i i operates be gels his interest on that besides Why as a popular investment it cannot be beaten I the Utah Eastern never ran a oar over its route the day after its completion and coal is reduced to 5 per ton it is i a good investment for the masses and no business man will say to the contrary But the Utah Eastern will run It is a small road and once completed tbe expenses of running it will be small and while it may not be able t oops with a moneyed institution like the U P it can endanger no such losses Persons who want to go t Park city on business or pleasure can do it in shorter time and HI less expense by tba Utah Eastern than by the Union Pacific it will be largely patronized by pleasure parties and tourists In summer it Cords more rapid transist for the mila than the other and has many advantages which insure it constant operation While its profits may not be hne ie expenses will ba proportionately email and the out lor k for the Utah Eastern ia anything but unfavorable |
