with accuracy accu-racy of the result of Mondays election i than last night Figures so far received seem to indicate tbe election of Flatted by about 1000 majority In the senate the republicans uill have A majoiity of at least ten members possibly eleven as it ii thought Brown one of the fusion candidates in Somerset is defeated The republican majority in the house will be from twenty to twentyfive Twelve of the thirteen representatives in Kennebcc sea rohiigsens R coin nf onp New York l5A Tribune reporter interviewed Marshall Jewell who said While the result of the election may be regarded as a republican reverse it is not a democratic ictory We have bean aware for a number of weeks that the state was overrun with money to be used against us In more than one letter Blame has informed us to that effect Then you do not consider the result unexpected or discouraging Not at allIs Is there any danger that the electoral vote of Maine may be lost to Garfield Not tbe slightest 1 think this result in Maine will help us because it will bring business men of the country to contemplate contem-plate the possibilities of the future more closely and more earnestly and will greatly add to their activity I thick the i use ol money by the coalition was largely in cities It i shown by the increase in their votes One of the young Irish orators whom I cent to Maine Captain Patick OFarrell of Connecticut who spent much time in the country districts wrote me several letters warning me not to count too surely on Maine ± 10 based his reasons on the fact that the business boom lisa not yet struck Maine The shipbuilding and lumber industries in that stata are poor labor is poorly employed em-ployed and therefore poorly paid so that in country districts there existed in Maine the sumo causes that operated largely in other stitei several years ago to create a derira for a chane In the cities they simply bought us out Portland 15Thre are still ISO towns to hear from mostly small and remote re-mote places The aggregate vote of tho state lastyeir was 13al70 This has increased in-creased a little over five per cent as far as received and if returns of towns increase in-crease in the same ratio the aggregate aggre-gate will reach 146800 of which the republicans should have about 73000 fusionists about 73000 and scattering about 500 Some of tile more remote faion districts have brought in republican republi-can j ins Fusionists will probably have a tuflmg plurality which will elect Plnisted if the amendments are adopted if not adopted or if found unconstitutional unconstitu-tional en account of being retroactive which question has been suggested tho election will go into tbo legislature The figures are so close tbat only an official count con decide it unless decided gains are made on ono side or tbe other in the remaining towns owing to errors which mUtt occur in the returns received In this way even differences between the tabulation of state officials and that of tho legislative committee may change the result re-sult Twentyfour towns were received this morning seven in Washington County six in Penobacot and eleven in Kenne bec giving Davis 2697 was the cause of the unexpected result One correspondent however declares that the republicans also spent money for the iraur per influencing of voters Times Portland Returns from back towns of which thero are a great number num-ber in Maine come in necessarily slow and it will not be possible for an accurate accu-rate statement of General Plaisteds plurality plu-rality to be given for several days Indeed In-deed it is possible barely possible that I he has no plurality and that the legislature legisla-ture which is still republican will have tho election to itelf as WRi the cae lat year Tho republicans mado a strong light in iludawrtska County away up it Atoostook and are placing a good deal of confidence in tho returns from a let of little towns in the region which gave I heavy greenback majorities last sear I and where a great 1 many bard money speeches have been made during the canvass just closed Small towns in other parts of the state show republican gains from greenbackors and why it is asked should not Aroostook make a simiar showing An analysis of tho figures received from Maine this morning shows pretty conclusively that Davis will be elected provided he can gain 90 votes over last year from the 200 or more towns and plantations to hear from This conclusion con-clusion is arrived at in this way Davis has gained m 34S towns 4U2 voles over the returns of 1879 This leaves him only 90 rotes to gain in order to tie with Plaisted It seems certain that Davis will make a much larger gain than 90 voles because the latter returns have given him very considerable advantage Now if he beats Plaisted by one vote he will bo elected provided that the constitutional consti-tutional amendment which is being voted for carries and is construed as retroactive This amendment provides for an election of governor by a plurality vote If the amendment fails or is construed as not retroactive in its i affect then Plaisted will fill far shortof a majority over all and the question of selection of governor will be reierrcd to the legislature whicn being largely republican will of course select Davis It looks now as though Davis coud hardly fail of winning Journal Bottom There is i no longer any dour t of republicans having majorities majori-ties in both branches of the legislature This gives them the United Stator senator sen-ator Fusionists now aho give up all claims in the first three congrestional districts and are beginning to weaken on the governor Latest returns strongly point to Davis reelection and republi cans are betting on it Lewiston Me J5The Evening Journal has returns from Oxford County complete save one town and two panta tion which lat year gave e fusion ma joriy showing that r ublicans have carried the county by 92 majority |
