Show PI < SILLY i j f One of the very silly sets of the I l I j f self gtyled Democratic convention on Tuesday was the adoption of a 11 1r resolution declaring that John T Caine Delegate to Congress Ja not itr a Democrat This was silly from L I various standpoints it was ailly i i j from any standpoint In the first place it is none of the affair of the I I aentJe en who met in the Courthouse I Court-house whether or not Mi Caine is a I II I Democrat So far as relates to them I t i Ii and their meeting Mr Caine might be a Republican a Democrat a I I Choctaw a lecturer on womans 1 rights or anything else named or otherwise animate or inanimate white or black hence it was silly I for the gentlemen to say anything I i of Mr Caine or his polities poli-ties It wai silly for them to resolve that Mr Caine is not a Democrat for the reason that such resolution could in no a manner affect the political prInci T 1 pies opinions or standing of Mr Caine the resolution could not make the gentleman less a Democrat Demo-crat or more aB anything else but it does make political asses of the I men who adopted it Democrats are not made by the resolves of others nor are they unmade by such resolves re-solves In all sincerity and in the best of good nature we ask the gentleman gen-tleman who declared Mr Caine is i net a Democrat if a dozen men were i to meet on Main street or elsewhere and unanimously resolve that Mr Samuel J Tilden or Mr Speaker Carlisle was not a Democrat would Mr Tilden or Mr Carlisle be less a Democrat Again were the I coming Democratic convention in j 4 Chicago to declare by unanimous I vote that Judge Thurman or Senator I Sena-tor Pendleton was not a Democrat would these gentlemen be more or less Democrats than they are It J t would have been just as consistent and just as proper for the convention conven-tion rn Tuesday to declare that I Judge Hunter is not Judge of the Tnird District Court or to resolve I that Victoria is not Queen of Great I P Britain ana Ireland Empress of I India protector of the faith etc as I J to declare that the Hon John T i I I Caine is not a Democrat end would I I have had about as much effect r As to Mr Caines political principles princi-ples beliefs and opinions they are not matters for discussion here t I j at this time any more than they were in the little gathering at the 4 g 11 Federal courtroom on Tuesday 1 ha has been chosen a member of the I Democratic Congressional committee commit-tee and it is quite probable that E J those who elected him knew what they were doing and Mr Caine understood I un-derstood what he was about in accepting ac-cepting the position and performing its duties if he is not a Democrat 1 if his sympathies are not with the j41 party or with the labors of the committee com-mittee of which he is a part it is 1 for him to announce the facts and 1 decline to serve i so long as he is a member of the committee and is S satisfactory to his fellow members 4 he is a Democrat to all intents and purposes the resolutions of a dozen F or more Utah gentlemen to the 4 contrary notwithstanding Nor does it make any difference in this I case what Mr Caine was politically ij last year or ten years ago or what he will be tomorrow or next year when he declares he is not a Democrat I e Demo-crat refuses to act in a place that can be filled only by a Democrat or does something to show that he is not a Democrat in sentiment or conduct con-duct it will be time for others to 4 act but then there will be no occasion I oc-casion for action on the part of x 4 other as Mr Caine will make it j unnecessary for them to take any II steps in his case I While neither asserting nor denying deny-ing anything in regard to Mr Caines political principles the gen I tleman himself baing abundantly able to make himself understood in I I I that regard THE HEBALD will say i I i that it has known Mr Caine qui 9 I j as long and as intimately as any of I 3J I Ibl it J1 I Ai i l lf6 M uI the gentlemen who voted for the resolution noted elsewhere but jt has never known him to be guil y of clnduct entirely undemocratic as was the calling and assembling of the convention of Tuesday |
