Show MADEMOISELLE RHEA I l Her Opening in a School for r Scandal The opening night of Mademoiselle Rhea engagement was not an auepicous one3S far as attendance went The approich of the circus I the plethora of amusements generally gene-rally an1 the prevailicg dullness of the time contributed to hurt the attendance and tho result was that the celebrated rnch actress made her first appearance in Salt Lake to an au Hence tha a company of much less pretenson might have been dissatisfied dis-satisfied with The dress circle however was fairly filled with that quality whch fully undeistood the nature rf the evenings performance and fully appreciated the keen strokes of satire and the polished < > its of sarcasm which make up I Sheridans masterpiece Rheas entrance en-trance upon the stage was greeted with the usual round cf welcome that over every eye and ear was trained to catch the magnificent detail of her toilette and the sounds of the expec ed broken accents iu the first particular she met every requirement indeed exceeded ex-ceeded every txpectation At every point where tbe7 could be shown to I advantage diamonds single clus terEd and chained glittered in her toilette Her dresses were of a magnificence in Material manufacture manufac-ture and fashion which have rarely been equaled upon our stage Her accent has not been belied when it has been spoken of as the < c most broken of tongues since the Tower at least when reference is made to tongues on the stage When speak slowly she Is plainly undesood In her rapid utterances utter-ances however one must strain his ear to the utmost to follow the import im-port of her language She has still a long course in EngJieh before her even before she can become as proficient pro-ficient either as Modjeska or Jan auschek Of the brilliancy of her genius her complete mastery of every stage detail and of the personal magnetism magnet-ism she exerts orer her audience we believe that there were not two differing opinions lat evening The character of Lady Teazle is not one that admits of much beyond be-yond lively chatter bright repi artee and the quarrelandmabe up business of the spoiled young wifebut of these opportunities she assuredly made the very most In the one earnest chance which the part affords that in the cSecreen scene she gave some display of that power in a more serious line which soe is said to possess We hardly fepl disposed with what we have thus far seen to accord Mademoiselle Ma-demoiselle Rhea the place beside Modjeska and Jananscheck which Is claimed for her but any positive judgment must be suspended until she has teen seen in one of hr i e pertoire better calculated to display the abilities of a star Of the support too much praise can hardly be uttered The Charles Surface of Mr Elliott was the leading feature after Rhea and the applause bestowed upon one of his efforts was more marked than any the lady herself received The Mrs Candor of Mrs Wren was an admirable piece of comedy and the other charactersSir Peter Joseph Sir Oliver etc were all in the most capable of hands The costuming of the entire cast was elegant and appropriate in the extreme ex-treme and the general management of the stage showed the hand of ex perlence and ingenuity in every detail de-tail To night the company appear in Fron Frou |
