Show I THE DEMOCRATIC UilL SI I A trio of gentlemen purporting to have been designated by the Democratic Territorial Committee have issued a call for a convention I S to meet in this city on the 10h of June next the object of which is to choose delegates to the national convention con-vention at Chicago in July The callis novel but eminently charac 5 i teristio of the gentlemen who issue 11 j t I it Democrats are supposed to l t S be Democrats no matter what i t their social or Eectarian leanings fl 1 the only acceptabe test being I be-ing a willingness to support 4 I sup-port the candidates and a preference for the principles of the t f Democracy yet this selfconsti r tuted committee assume to prescribe 1 what the local qualifications for admission t ad-mission to the convention shall be 1 S saying in substance that noe but those who subscribe to their peculiar i pecu-liar articles of faith need apply It I I is as if the Democratic committee I of New York or any other State were to say in their calluN admitted S ad-mitted unless they arc opposed to II free trade and in favor of prohibition 1 S prohibi-tion tionFirst t First itia denied that these gentlemen i gen-tlemen or any others are a Democratic 1t Demo-cratic Territorial committee They r may have been Democrats at some I period in their lives and it is possible pos-sible they entertain a lingering sentiment of respect for some of the principles of the grand old party of I I the people but in Utah there is noDe no-De ocratic organization nor baa C there been any for years past hence I there can be no Territorial S 1 or other committee in existence t exist-ence If it were to be admitted f I which it is notthat the self ty led Territorial committee had been i t regularly chosen the gentleman 1 h I composing it long since forfeited all tr right to the position for they have r i not only by failure to act during the i past six or eight years allowed the S E organization to go to decay but h i have themselves and all of them t ti i acted with other parties oppos d tot to-t 1 Democracy they have also done r campaign and other work for candidates S 3 candi-dates lor office who were pronounced pro-nounced and earnest in their i opposition to Democratic practices prac-tices and principles UncleS Uncle-S Sammy Tiiden Senator Bayard and I 14 Speaker Carlisle would be laughed I at if they were tq calla Republican f National Convention and issue an address to the party setting forth the i necesary qualIfication to admis t 7J sion Such an act on their part 1 would be no more ridicnloui than I what has been done by the self I styled Democratic committee S S It is to the discredit of the Utah Democrats that the Democratic L f S party here is not large and flourishing j flourish-ing There are many Democrats in the Territory who would like to I U work in a Democratic organization sk for the spread of Democratic doeS doe-S trines and if there were such an organization or-ganization in existence they would soon find their proper field in poll tics The movement set on foot by 4 the Eelfchosen committee is not likely to either make Democrats or Encourage true Democrats to take part in any proceedings proceed-ings sought to be inaugurated I The fact that the action of the pretended I pre-tended committee and its undemocratic undemo-cratic address are heartily approved and loudly applauded by a radical organ of the Republican party S t should cause the gentlemen signing S the call and address to at least ask themselves if they have not made a mistake in claiming to be Democrats t Demo-crats It Js suggested that the initiative t towards organizing the Democratic party be taken by the issuance of a j call for a mass convention signed fcy men known to be true and consistent con-sistent Democrats If such a call be signed by men who work with and I for the Liberal today and take the itump for a Republican tomorrow it will receive no favorable response nor will it do to present in I I i it principles that are not 5 1H tl f t > H Democratic but are the spiteful ideas of narrowminded men who think less ot party politics and doctrine doc-trine than of displaying their own vindictiveness We advise Democrats to be wary in this matter There is no Democratic Demo-cratic party in Utah and there is no Democratic committe The call for a convention that has been issued is unauthorized and bogus inasmuch as it claims to be legitimate It is a trick or Echeme in the interest of the Liberal Party and true Democrats Demo-crats should avoid It lest their conduct con-duct come up against them hereafter when Utah shall have a D mocratic party |
