Show 60TERXOR ORDWAY INDICTED The other day the wires brought the news of the indictment of Governor Gov-ernor N G Ordway of Dakota but failed to state the particulars The specals to the Ohicago papers supply sup-ply these The charges are ekIng and receivirg bribes as a United States officer The Governor was arrested but he pleaded to be spared the humility of appearing in court at present and was allowed to remain re-main at Vermillion twentyfour miles from Yankton while his attorney went forward and filed a bond for 10000 It 13 alleged that Ordway was invited to appear before the grand jury In his own and other cases he declined and now asserts that he was denied permission tote to-te tify He also charges that the judge and district attorney were I excited by malice in the presentation presenta-tion of the evidence agalnst him which has called forth a series of resolutions by the jury declaring that the testimony presented disclosed dis-closed a condition of public affairs which demand as a matter of safety to political institutions to domestic do-mestic happiness and to law anl Justice a full investigation that the jury has made such investigation investi-gation and that the United States attorney acted without prejudice throughout and has called and examined ex-amined witnesses for and against Ordway without discrimination The two closing resolutions are as follows Resolved That we the Grad Jury farther repudiate as false and unsupported unsup-ported by facts the charges that these prosecutions were brought about by Hugh J Campbell l united States At torney for the Territory of Dakota through motives of malice and spite and not for a just enforcement of law and having listened to all the evidence that could be obtained that would tend l to throw any light on the investigation of acts of public officials we the Grand Jury hereby declare and assert that the condition of the administration of our public affairs as disclosed by the evidence presented to this Grand Jury fully justified United States Attorney Campbell In presenting this evidence before this Grand Jury fr its investigation and that we the Grand Jury believe that in placing this investigation inves-tigation of offenses committed by poor and uninfluential men by disregarding disregard-ing the mighty wealth and influence that would be brought to bear against him in support of the defense in these investigations Hugh J Campbell was performing the highest and noblest duty of a United States Attorney At-torney and had he faltered in his duty in this regard because of fear or favor he would have sacrificed the duties of his office and the public trust and confidence reposed In him Resolvedt That we the Grand Jury hereby repudiate as untrde and unsupported un-supported by fast any insinuationscast upon the professional conduct of his honor the Chiet Justice A J Edgerton that we acknowledge in him a life and character beyond reproach that faithful performance of his life work as a man and a judge nee1 s no words of commendation commen-dation toisUitihitin the minds of those fortunate1 his acquaintance Governor Ordway has never been popular in the Territory indeed he has never commanded ordinary respect re-spect He went out of the office of sergeantat arms of the House of Representatives under a cloud and was foisted upon the people of Dakota Da-kota against their solemn protest Nevertheless he was a Republican officeholder by profession and had to be provided for hence he was dumped into adefenceless Territory the usual way of disposing of his kind ills career In Dakota seems to have evenmoreurooked than in Washington and the prospect now is that it will end iff the penl j i t ivSJivA ei < J tentiary All of hem dont windup wind-up in jail and perhaps all of them shouldnt do so fewer of them get there than would do if they received their just dues and the laws were enforced We congratulate the people of Dakota on having taken steps to get rid of an offensive and corrupt officer who has so firm a hold on his party that it dare not or cmnot drop him |
