Show The SwaimBateman Affair 1 I Washington 17Judge Advocate tleneral Swaim said today that he intended to say nothing at present about the charges preferred against him by Mr Bateman He added that the matter was one for the civil courts to decide that the contractors con-tractors to whom he had given the bill sued Bateman for the amount it calls for and in the trial everything in connection with the matter would become known and he was willing to stand by what would come oat then As to a court martial mar-tial he said he baldly thought it likely that a court martial would try what evidently belonged to the civil courts When questioned farther far-ther Gen Swaim said he was sure the whole trouble would be found to have originated from a mistake and misunderstanding on the part of Bateman The secretary has as yet no action In the matter and it Is stated that a settlement is being arranged ar-ranged which will result in the withdrawal of the charges against ien Swaim Mr Bateman banker who yesterday yes-terday furnished a copy of his charges against General Swaim says this afternoon the 5 000 due bill mentioned therein having to day been returned to his firm and the suit against them based upon it by parties to whom it was transferred having been withdrawn he hall written a letter to the Secretary f War as follows Dear Sir The suit against our firm on the due bill mentioned in my charges yesterday against General G D Swaim having been withdrawn and the differences between General Swaim and myself satisfactorily settled set-tled I hereby withdraw the charges ontained in my letter of April 16h against said General G D I Swaim he claiming they were made under misapprehension of facts which I i concede Very truly yours A E BATEMAN |
