Show SUNDAY SERVICES I is Tabernacle The services in the Tabernacle on Sundayafternoon were opened by the choir singing the hymn beginning Lilt sinners tarn their course And choose the road to death i But in the worship of my God Ill pond my daily breath The choir sang the hymn commencing com-mencing Afflicted Seint to Christ draw near Tliy Savior gracious prjmJee bear riis faithful word declares to theo That as thy day thy strength shall be Elder John Nicholson addressed the congregation his subject being the first principles of the gospel of Cliiist lie said the iirsc and funda menTitl principle is faith and nothing noth-ing was accomplished without it It is faith that induces men to search for knowledge To conform to the will of God one must have faith in God and his universal power faith iu a plan formed in heaven for the redemption and salvation sal-vation of the human family faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God who was sent to earth to suffer for the sins of the world and who Is the medium through which man must return to the presence of the Father Some ignorant persons had asserted that the saints did not believe in Jesus Christ but the very nameChurch of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints was proof of belief in the Savior i The world taught and believed that all that was necessary to be saved was belief in Jesus Christ but the saints held that no one would be saved by faith or belief alone but there must be faith and works combined com-bined Paul had faith in God before be-fore he was converted to the gospel it was not a faith that could haves have-s ved him but rather a faith that would have led him down to destruction de-struction He persecuted the saints relieving he was serving the Lord in doing so but he was finally made to see the error of his ways and to accompany his faith by work Repentance Re-pentance of sin is the seco jd principle prin-ciple of the gospel and this doctrine was the great stumbling block to the acceptance of the gospel by the human hu-man family There must be a discontinuance dis-continuance of sin and evildoing and the leading of anew life which the world would not do The third principle of the gospel is baptism I which is necessary to the remission of sins repeutencb alone not being enough This is a law or ordinance ordi-nance of God and must bo complied with by all who receive salvation And the baptism must be made by immersion as the Lord had ordained Christ say ing except a man be born of water and the spirit he could never enter the kingdom of heaven Jesus was so baptized and all must loll w his example fulfilling every part of the law But this will not admit a person per-son to Gods presence There must be the baptism of the spirit and power of God of the Holy Ghost the power and spirit by which men know their position with reference to their Maker It is tho influence that dispels darkness from the mind and shows the individual the truth or fidelity of the doctrines The Holy Ghost is imparted by the laying on of hands by those having authority to administer in the ordi nance He elaborated at consid erable length as to each of these principles or doctrines quoting from the scriptures in con lirmation of his assertions The choir sang and Elder G G Bywater pronounced the benedic tion |
