Show TEtEGEAPBIO Presbyterians Saratoga 18The moderator of the Presbyterian general assembly announced an-nounced tbe Etandicg committees this morning The usual reports wre then submitted Dr Herrick Johnson chairman chair-man of tbe committee on education read the annual report which declared the field for necessary work ia west of Ohio America has too many colleges poorly endowed The report recommended a system college for the supervision and creation of a new and distinct board with headquarters at Chicago The report was made the special order for Saturday An overture from the presbytery of Ma con was referred to the committee on church polity At the afternoon session the first order of business was the reception of delegates of the Southern general assembly and Dr J L Evans chairman of the committee com-mittee appeared on the platform with Rev Dra Wm Brown Fredericksburg Thomas A Hoyt Nashville and Patrick Joyce Louisville They were presented to the moderator welc med by him and introduced to the general assembly A message of peace and fraternal good will Was read by Dr Brown and repeadly applauded It breathed sentiments of reconciliation ana a desire for the Christian fellowship A reorganization be deemed prActicable for reasons of convenience if for none other and this can be done only by the acknowledgement ac-knowledgement of error lathe beginning His colleague Dr Hoyt spoke briefly and eloquently conveying the opinion of that the element of the southern church that desires a reconciliation and reunion of the two branches of the Presbyterian Church Judge Patrick Joyce lay delegate dele-gate briefly spoke coinciding in the views of Dr Hoyt because he believed a great mtjority of the members of both churches were favorable to only one Presbyterian Church in the United States The moderator made a fitting reply At the evening session the question of Sunday school work was discussed by Rev Drs Herrick Johnson of Chicago Howard Crosby of New York and JA Warden of Philadelphia |
