Show IIIIBERAL LIBERALS I One Of Them Done Up by a liberal r SALT LAKE CITY December 10 18S3 Air EditctrIn the copy of your paper which was sent to me as a sample I read a number of interesting articles one from Utah on which I J thought it might not be amiss to Bay a few words Your correspondent in concluding his letter from one of the many Mormon Mor-mon settlements complains of hard times and uses the following words The inclosed dollar is to further my subscription I wish I could send more but at this time I cannot do it for I get but a poor chance to earn money or anything else among these saintly beaetly thugs I Now the little town from whch your correspondent writes is a quiet I we1ordered + village and the people are quite prosperous generally Tbe settlement is pleasantly located I and it has always kept pace with the many other successful little farming towns of UI hAs h-As far as I can Icarn the writer of the letter to which I refer is a pco man and it would eeera that commonsense common-sense would prompt more cart ful comment than be makes upon bis neighbors on wom he depends to some considerable extent for bra livelihood live-lihood Note where he says This infernal Mormon filthy debasing humbug is a sore curse to this grand and delightful territory degrading women to the level of beasts filling the country with illegitimate ille-gitimate ignorant children instilling into them a hatred animosity and disloyalty to tbe general government How long oh I bow long will the officers of this mighty nation permit tbia nasty vile system of disloyalty to lilt up its vile hydra head and menace me-nace and aefy the laws of the nation and outrage society they havewith their filthy beastly debauchery these many years and are still doing I believe in free thought and free speech but r also believe in cool temper and good judgment and I submit to you that in my opinion this communication to which I refer lacks the most important elements No matter how true tbe statements might be any reasonable person might I know that such abnsa of an entire community would not be likely to help your correspondents condition financially If I am not mistaken it is not long since the writer of that letter belonged to the church at which he hurls so many stinging adjectives and from my own knowledge I can assert that the church was no better then than now Without doubt at that time he was as much a saintly beastly thug as any other of the members and I hesitate not to Eay that he then would have resented such charges with as much vehemence vehem-ence as any Mormon would now The chances are none of them will pay any attention to his letter as they are eo accustomed to this sort of abuse that it hardly creates a ripple m their placidity I should have paid no attention thereto only that I have a keen eye of illiberal Liberals I think them the most contemptible beings on the face of the earth that is I would think so if I did not know better The fact is the possEssion of broad untrammeled ideas intoxicates them and they are at times as irresponsible irres-ponsible as the veriest bigot It is a question of time only however before they overcome this incubus provided of course they be really liberal I do not mention the name of your correspondent cor-respondent because I do not wish to make this letter personal and have no desire to make him any more con spicuuua than he has mad himself You know Mr Editor that a man cannot speak in similar terms of any community in the world without arousing feelings of resentment and I ask you even admitting that all his soathingts were really deserved if he in your opinion has reason to expect to earn money to pay for tbe Truth Seeker or for any other purpose in a little rural own where every one knows he has said such things Freetbpught and Liberalism do not in my opinion give authority to abuse anyone neither do they make a philosopher phil-osopher of a foolish person suddenly It takes time and if the process of parturition is not a painful one the neophyte mav consider himself fortunate fortu-nate There is altogether too much of a tendency to tyrannize over our fellows just as we claim tbe priests have done over us when we smell the morning air and first feel that our Umbd and brains are free And this rebound from quiescent slavery to robust demonstrativeness requires some brain to hold an equilibrium Let us try and furnish the necessary neces-sary brains and if possible avoid tee errors of the past So far as the improvement im-provement of the age and race is concerned con-cerned we might as well be slaves as tyrants as well be wronged as wrongdoers wrong-doers I incloae 1 Pleaae eend your paper for a while and let me get better acquainted with it Bo far I muat say that I admire t for many reasonsB E Fair in Truth Seeker I |
