Show UNIVERSITY NAME MEN I WHO ARE TO ATHLETICS At the regular meeting of the University of Utah board of regents held at the university Monday Dr Jakob Balm Bolin dean of the Chautauqua school of physical education and head of the Bolin institute of physical education and therapeutics of New York City was chosen professor of physical education at the university and Fr Fred d Bennion former Utah foot football football ball star and present coach of the B Y U at Provo was chosen director of athletics and assistant to Professor Bolin to succeed Coach Joe Mad Maddock Maddock dock The Tho selection of oC Professor ProCessor Bolln to take charge ot o all athletic ork at the school marks the beginning ot of new life lite for athletics and gymnasium work at atthe atthe the school With the coming ot of Professor ProCessor BoUn there will probably bo be a change In the work The Tho work In the gymnasium for both the women and the men will be under the direction ot of Professor Balm BoUn He will also have charge of conducting all physical examinations Fred Ben Bennion Bennion nion who will be an assistant to Pro Professor lessor fessor BolIn will have havo only athletics to I handle Botin Bolin Is Known i Professor ProCessor Balm BoUn has a worldwide rep reputation i as a director of gymnasium work The past summer he was at the university during the summer school term terin He was graduated from Lied becks Institute Stockholm Sweden 1888 lecturer and teacher in Brooklyn normal school of gymnastics lecturer and teacher In Anderson and New Haven normal of physical education lecurer and teacher in New York normal school of physical training owner ovner of the Bolin Institute In New York City lecturer and teacher at atthe atthe the Chautauqua school of physical edu education education cation since 1891 dean of same school since 1906 The salary of Professor Bolln Bolin will be 2250 a year Record The new coach Is well known In Utah athletics Before going to Provo to coach the B Y U Bennion had a wide experience both in football and ana track For six years he was a mem ber of the university football squad Three of these years he played as a prep student and three years as a col lege student In 1906 he was captain of the tho university football squad After the university he went to the I of Pennsylvania On ac account count of the rule for athletes he was prevented from playing on the university first squad but he was made captain of the freshman squad After graduating from the University I I of Pennsylvania Bennion became coach of the B Y U teams of Provo taking the place of Coach who went to the Agricultural college In his work at the B Y U Bennion showed him himself himself self to be a good coach During the track season of last year his team ran the University of at Utah team a close sec eec second and ond by three points for tor the state cham championship New Coach Talks Coach IntervIewed Monday night In regard to his plan for tor next year said In football this fall faU I Int Intend nd to direct ct my w wOrk rk along the lines of both Michigan and Pennsylvania Ido I do not expect to stick very closely to either I style but to take the good points whIch I I learned at Utah from Maddock and the good points I picked up at Pennsyl Pennsylvania Pennsylvania vania For the track work I expect to adopt the training methods of at Mike Murphy of Pennsylvania from which I expect to obtain ln the best results The coming coining summer I am going east to attend the Harvard school of phYSical physical cal education where I expect to get some pointers from their athletic instructors on both track and football While mite In the tho east I expect to go down tp t Philadelphia to go over the changes In the rules for the coming year When I return In the fall I will have my plays for the season mapped out so that there will be no hitch in the work when training begins I expect to keep alive the good work started by Maddock for early training before the beginning of at the school year and I hope to turn out the best results for Utah next year ear Coach Joe Maddock in speaking of the prospects for next year saId With Bolin and Bennion at the nead of the university athletic work there Is no reason why Utah should not have a wonderful team next year The choice of Bennion for football coach is as good gooda a choice as could be made and I can only say that I am glad such a thoice holce was made Both of the new men will assume their duties at the start of the school year this tall falL |
