tact that the proletariats of the whole civilized world have joined hands in a general protest against the killing of ot Francisco Ferrer on October 13 six speakers were applauded to the echo by a crowd of oC about 1000 men and women in Unity hall hail last night Fol Following Following lowing the lead of ot other clUes cities in the States and Europe the follow following following ing lug resolutions were passed which will wm willbe willbe be set sett to the Spanish embassy tt ft t Washington Whereas the founder of the modern schools In Spain and the foremost leader In the movement for Cor popular education in that country Francisco Ferrer was recently shot to death by order of the government and Whereas universal education in Spain as In any unjustly governed gov country means revolution and Whereas this murder is only one of thousands perpetrated by the ruling class dass in Spain in order that it may 3 keep the masses In ignorance and so o continue to exploit a people already re Te reduced reduced to beggary and Whereas the final responsibility for this attempt to crush the struggle for freedom and blot out the light of mod modern modern modera ern era thought among the exploited prole proletariat proletariat ol of o Spain rests resh upon two institutions Institutions a church which fears the light and a state which knows not Justice therefore be it Resolved That we citizens of Salt Lake in mass meeting assembled Join our voices with the lovers of liberty and light everywhere in earnest protest against this attempt to suppress popular popular popular lar education in Spain and be it Resolved further That we protest against the criminal employed in the arrest trial conviction and exe execution execution cution of Ferrer and affirm our belief that a social order employing them or condoning them is doomed and be It Resolved further That In token of the sincerity of the foregoing resolutions resolutions we here pledge our fullest sym resolutions be b sent to the Spanish embassy and to the public press Henry W Lawrence was in charge of tho the meeting and made i a short ad address address address dress explaining its purpose He lIe said of the people of Spain are not able to read or write and it was this condition which Ferrer strove and for tor which he gave his life Ufe He declared it was a disgrace for tor the United States to maintain friendly re relations relations lations with two such powers as Spain and Russia whose governments had brought about the deaths of thousands who had contended for free tree speech and liberty The Rev Elmer I L Goshen eulogized the life Ute and work of at Ferrer It mat matters matters matters not whether Ferrer was guilty or Innocent declared the speaker The fact is that he was not given a trial and he was found guilty and killed for nothing in the world but fighting to raise the oppression from the people whom he ho loved If It that Is the style or of orthe orthe the government end of that government W S Dalton a prominent socialist declared that Ferrers doom was sealed eight years ago when he Established the first free school in Barcelona Bar elona Mr Dalton made a bitter attack upon the priesthood in general especially the Catholic church The Rev William Thurston Thuraton Brown Drown made a few remarks and then offered the resolutions which were accepted unanimously As the meeting was about bout to adjourn Richard Sylvester Sylester Kennedy asked if he might have fifteen minutes to defend the Catholic church This was granted but when he declared the church had nothing to do with the killing kUling of oC Ferrer those in the crowd picked hats and started out Kennedy saw it was all over smiled and left the stage |
