events The arrest was made yesterday afternoon by Lucien H Smyth deputy In the office of at James JamesH H Anderson United States marshal and C D Lowe postoffice inspector in inthis Inthis Inthis this district The members of the marshals force and Inspector Lowe had been looking for McCoy for the last ten days hay hav having ho hoIng haying ing been informed that he was wanted at the places mentioned Inspector Lowe telegraphed to several eve I points and secured information confirming the re report report report port that McCoy Was in Salt Lake Neither Inspector Lowe Lone nor Deputy Marshal Smyth knew McCoy but they had been furnished a description from front the east On Wednesday tIt postoffice Inspector happened on McCoy in com corn company company pany with another man and a woman He traced them to a place in Third I South street and then got into com corn communication comI I with the marshals office in informing Informing inI I forming Mr Smyth that he had found a man whom hom he thought to be McCoy That officer at once took toole his hat and anel gun and started out meeting the In Inspector Inspector inspector and making plans for cover covering coverIng ing In the man supposed to be wanted Two men came out of the place short shortly ly afterwards one of whom looked to Mr Smyth like McCoy although he had bad no mustache while the description re received received from Nebraska said he had one The men Inen walked east e st in Third South street and were ere watched by Mr Smyth He was Joined Cy Inspector Lowe who thought the man was McCoy and Mr Smyth started in pursuit Joined by Sheriff Out Third South street the two men walked followed by Mr Smyth w wIn who In turn was followed at a short dis die distance distance tance by the postoffice inspector The Themen Themen Themen men who were being followed turned down Seventh East street and went south When they had gone a few blocks Sheriff Joseph C Sharp who had noticed McCoy and his companion walking out the thoroughfare followed by Smyth and Lowe LoV and who nho made inquiries of Mr Lowe Loe as to what was In the wind drove up and overtook Mr lIr Smyth and informed him that the theman theman theman man in front was McCoy The sheriff sherif then went ahead and overtook the two men and when Mr Smyth came up introduced him to McCoy The deputy marshal showed the warrant he held officers here said that McCoy was of dark com corn complexion complexion dark hair weighs about pounds being about 5 I feet 10 inches In height and being about 36 years of age He has dressed well and It was said that he made a considerable dis display display display play of Jewelry It was said that he had been known under the names of ot H W Stockton Ed Turner and Ed Jackson The local officials say he has used the name of Ferguson here He is said to have hav been living recently r near Eighth East and Seventh South streets and is married his wires relatives living here her McCoy has h a police record in Salt Lake extending over several years Two years I Iago Iago ago he was a saloonkeeper The police pollee record show him to have been arrested no less than three times during the thu past eighteen months once for battery once In connection with a foot race swindling game and once for vagrancy Last May Mayhe Ma Mahe Mayhe he was arrested by Chief of Police S M Barlow under suspicion of participating In a swindling game at the race track during the spring meet Being unable to fo prove anything against him the police pollee preferred vagrancy charges against him and ran was also arrested in Pocatello some time ago for pulling off the old foot race game came ame on the unsuspecting sports of that town According to the Information which has come here the indictment that he cannot have bave his name brought into the matter Many persons desiring to make a little money themselves have placed bets on the same proposition and have induced Indu d others to do so finally losing all when the tho th result of the event came out directly opposite to that on which they had been figuring The officials who have been looking into the case care say some of the men concerned in the deals were known under certain certain tain tam numbers the country and andI I that McCoy was known as No 4 Sheriff Sharp said he knew that McCoy has been following the race track and antI other forms of gambling here and had I seen him at various times believing that he had been here much of the time fir firing ur ir iring ing the last few months The sheriff has had McCoy brought to his office on one or two occasions to question him about certain transactions in which he had figured figU fig figured U red McCoy is said to have been makl lg plans to leave for South America as
