Show DRAWING TO bA A CLOSE Caleb Powers Case Will Be finished Saturday Georgetown Ky Oct 22 The attorneys nays for the defense In the trial of Caleb Powers stated today that they will close their case by Thursday or Friday the defense rests the jurors will be taken to Frankfort to inspect the capital buildings and other places mentioned in the testimony On Saturday arguments will be heard and it is believed that a verdict will be rendered before the term of court ex cx expires pires Saturday at midnight P M H OReilly an insurance man of Louisville who was in the senate chamber when Goebel was shot said It was his Impression that the shots were fired directly In front of the state house and not from the executive building Former State Treasurer George W Long testified that on the morning of Jan 20 the day Goebel was shot he was instructed by V S Taylor to go goto to Louisville with Caleb Powers and Walter R B Day and make arrangements to bring men to Frankfort from west western era ern Kentucky The witness said that when Powers heard that Goebel hail had been shot he said all chances for the Republicans to win the contest had been ruined Ed Mentz of Glasgow junction and J JFrank JFrank Frank Taylor of Glasgow testified that on Jan 30 they received telegrams from G W W Long calling them to Louisville and when they reached Louisville Mr Long told them he had wanted them to bring some men to Frankfort from western Kentucky but the shooting of Goebel had upset all plans and that the themen themen men would not be brought Former State Treasurer Walter R B Day testified that he and Powers went to Louisville on Jan 30 to make ar arrangements arrangements to bring men from west western era ern Kentucky to petition the legisla legislature legislature ture When Caleb Powers heard that Goe Goebel bet bel hind been shot Mr Day testified that he said Its an outrage and it will ruin our chances to gain our offices |
