BIG NEWS this season in xal affairs is the number of niokie head coaches preparer prepar-er their first ever encounter en-counter in the big times, iliree new coaches are at xalhigh schools, Viewmont, Sountiful and Clearfield, 'Mi makes half the coaches j a the county new this season. Ron Johansen takes over 'is reigns at Viewmont from J Jtm Cleverly who called it J luiis last year. Jim was the coach the school has wwnso Ron will be stepping j mo some big shoes. Ron has nan assistant at the school for several years so he's well known by the players. MIKE HALL is the new . boss at Bountiful, taking over from John Robison who is now at Davis High. Mike was the junior varsity coach at Bountiful under Joe Johnson and then took a year off from basketball before returning two years ago to take over the sophomore program. Mike also is no stranger to the players at the school. Finally Craig Hansen has stepped up from the junior varsity program to take over the varsity at Clearfield. Craig takes over from Rodger Reid who is now an assistant coach at Brigham Young University. Craig has been at the school a long time and is well acquainted with the system. sys-tem. THE THREE holdovers from last year are Doug Moon at Layton, Mike Gardner at Davis and Wayne Baker at Woods Cross. All three have . good records and have good talent returning from three clubs that all made it into the state playoffs. Woods Cross surprised a lot of people with their Consolation Championship, Cham-pionship, fifth place, in the 3A tournament. There are also some top-players top-players returning for each club this year. Clearfield has Rodger Vincent, a jumping-jack jumping-jack type center back, and Layton has Gordon Andersen, who they report is playing better than ever. DAVIS ONLY lost a few players to graduation and they have the likes of Mike Mounteer and Jeff Emery, both starters a year ago, returning. re-turning. Woods Cross has one back including their All-State . center in Mark McCleary. Viewmont has their two guards, Jim Miller and Brad Thacker, back plus some forwards for-wards who saw some varsity action. Bountiful is a question mark with the majority of their starters lost to graduation. gradua-tion. Only Lynn Muir and Mike Nelson return with any experience but the Braves have some good juniors. SO WITH tryouts still in progress it's hard to judge who'll be playing or starting. In the next few weeks we'll have scouting reports of all - the clubs as they finalize their squads. Should be an interesting year, especially with three coaches getting their first look at varsity action. |
