Show Salt Lakes Lake's Smoke Nuisance NB obstacle in the way o of progress that Salt Lake endures and ONE ii for which there thero is no adequate excuse is the smoke smoky nuisance nuisance We TC are arc not blessed with a plethora of manufacturing plants unfortunately no great array of smokestacks pollutes th the heavens while pointing the tho way to industrial eminence no stupendous group of factories and workshops belches forth hour after hour a mass muss of smoke and soot that we can excuse because of the payrolls they foster None Nono of these aids to a city's greatness are aro present in this city to an extent that could overcome our repugnance to tho the laden filth-laden air that we c breathe every hour of the day daj and night Salt Lake at the present time transcends Pittsburgh in the degree of its smoke nuisance without Pittsburgh's industrial eminence as a D consolation and assuredly without without without with with- out Pittsburgh's excellent reason renson for it Salt Lakes Lake's absurd condition at this season of th the year is either because of a a. lack of law v or lack of enforcement of that law Although a city with a reputation from coast to coast us ns one in which the busi busi- business ness neis and professional men dress up to the minute fully and completely the murky atmosphere which we now have and ond presumably must trust endure en- en duro dure until Juno 1 gives tho prosperous merchant lawyer lawer or physician the tho outward semblance of a tramp for re reasons which are not within hi his control Women who affect light attire snowy plumes and those intimate intimate inti mate garments which an all consuming modesty forbids that we should m mention nt on emerge from the business district tunnel bearing no slight resemblance to coal Their attire is co covered ered with soot their lungs are choked with fumes by which tho the basis of pulmonary disease is substantially laid and their otherwise othel o sweet dispositions disposition are aro ruined If there were any excuse for this we should not feel that we ought to call attention to it in ins his pointed manner But we fail to conjure any reason for it A dry and rarefied air air that makes practically no resistance whatever to the entrance of the suns sun's rays the heavens above ye Salt Lake should be a translucent blue at all times Yet strange as ns it may seem the great orb of the day is vi visible for only a fe few v hour during the most glorious winter days of which any state in the tho entire country can bo boast t. t The h r real al reason mason n on is found o in public carelessness publia public I s t u I I 11 slovenliness officials officials' 1 dereliction of ox duty auty and failure to enforce the law low For a decade succeeding city administrations have seemed to be t trying t to enforce the tho law late ample amplo notice has liar usually been given of tho the fell purpose and convictions have haye been generally secured whenever er tho the city's law department found an offender of so little political importance importance tance that it was as safe to annoy him From that we deduce that tho the ordinances are sufficient and that whatever abuses there now are s should hould be traced to official failure to do its duty rather than lack of statutory authority under which to proceed The Commercial club in its admitted wisdom has been giving the matter its attention for which that splendid organization deserves praise But Rut the chief end of activity p public or private is accomplishment we are justified therefore in view of the lack of result to suggest gently and with due deference that the club press the accelerator or or whatever stimulant it uses vises and start something that will continue in motion until something beneficial beneficial bene bene- occurs Salt SaIt Lakes Lake's s atmosphere at this season of the year ear is a disgrace because it is inexcusably inexcusable if it were ine inevitable impossible of correction w we e would not complain But the use of hard coal or of intelligence in in firing fining would remedy matters martens quickly If there be an any with sensibilities so dull that the filth we constantly breathe that settles upon clot clothing bing in home and upon the persons of those in the streets to tho the detriment of health and comfort su suggests no reform for him we have nothing but sympathy Providence moves in a n mysterious way Its wonder to perform per per- I form and it requires all sorts of people to make a world orld I IFor For the inactivity of the city commission we can find no shadow of excuse excise If the enforcement nt of an adequate rata law worked any hardship II upon pon the people if it subjected them to any considerable additional expense ex ex- 1 I I pense pease if it gave them more trouble than that under which they already labor we might find extenuation for their failure to obey the existing ordinances and the failure of the city government to enforce them But the nuisance is capable of removal without additional expense or labor and with little additional forethought Why then should this community community com com- 4 1 mu ity whose atmosphere should be he as clear as crystal stagger under 4 an accumulation of filth of which the greatest manufacturing centers in ini i the country would be bo asham ashamed d f- f 4 |
