Show A High School Super League? By DAVE WIGHAM Again next year the high schools in the state will be placed into categories according accord-ing to their enrollment. But is the method fair to all schools. AS IT stands now a 4A school is any school with an enrollment of 1200 students or more. A 3A school has an enrollment of 900 up to 1200 students. The reasoning is that a school with say 930 students shouldn't have to compete with a school with 1300 students. But at the same time a school with 1200 students can compete with a school with 2700 students. That's right, Cottonwood High has around 2700 students, as does Skyline, and Bountiful is lucky to have 1250 yet the Braves are put in the same classification. WHAT THE schools should do is create a super league, or change the present system. If they would change the enroll- ment figures just a little they would probably have better leagues or classifications. The 3A schools should be those with enrollments between 900 and 1500 with the 4A schools being those with over 1500 students. ALREADY SOME schools who have had success on the 4A level have applied for the 3A status, Provo High being one of them. Why not let Bountiful be in the same boat? Hie High School Association needs to take a good long look at their method of operation and take all ideas and suggestions into consideration before deciding their classifications. clas-sifications. JUST BETWEEN you and me it made me mad last week when some of the fans, especially Bountiful, are starting to second guess the coaches of the football teams. Both Paul Waite at Bountiful Boun-tiful and Monte Jones of Viewmont have indicated that they have received plenty of advice as to what to do to win. THIS IS ridiculous, there is no way on earth a fan in the stands who only sees a team once a week can pin point the problem areas. If they are that noticeable to the public believe me the coaches notice the problem also. When Coach Waite took his squad to state last year he was great, now his Braves have run onto hard times everyone knows more than him. Believe me Paul Waite knows more about winning football than all the fans who follow Bountiful Boun-tiful High. THE SAME goes for Coach Jones, he is doing a fantastic job at Viewmont, if you don't believe me just ask his players. So until Paul or Monte start telling you how to run the office of-fice or ask for your opinion don't come down on their football programs, dw |
