Show WATT from uio the D deseret seret news extra of aug OF UTAH J proclamation BY THE GOVERNOR the utah indians of this territory I 1 kave been fur for some time and still aarein are in a state of open and declared war with the white set ble tiers committing injuries upon them at every opportunity killing them driving off their I 1 took stock and burning their mills and dwellings 9 a bd d I 1 whereas numerous responsible affidavit i icare are lodged in the office of the united da 18 brict te biot court for utah territory setting I 1 ertain white ip habitants of this territory 1 I in I 1 defiance of all law justice and humania humanity v have trafficked and do still traffic with the said hostile Indians selling them powder lead leads and guns and ahrea threaten ten to continue to do so and 1 1 whereas such conduct tends directly tonn to augment burdens which are already exceeding exceed exceedingly in ly I 1 j onerous therefore to promote the pu public safety f 0 and preserve the property and lives of the people from hostile indians i I 1 BRIGHAM YOUNG governor and ezi officio superintendent of indian affairs of the said territory of utah do hereby order and i direct as follows to wit I 1 i i let all the he forces be in readiness to I 1 march to an any y poi point n t at a moments notice and when not in service remain in their various lo 10 1 cat ions using all diligence to completely secure I 1 sufficient hay bay and all the crops and keeping f strict guard ard upon stock and all exposed proper ty and prosecuting the completion of their de f fences encee with all possible speed 2nd and lot let every person be prepared to defend himself and to aid others by personal ser vica er with supplies whenever required 3rd ard every person whether resident ornon or nonresident i is s hereby strictly forbidden to give tra deor in anyway any voluntary volun tari 1 in possession of atty utah Indi anany sword knife or any weapon or of war or ar or to give or in in any manner render to any utah indian any aid shelter food or comfort e either thor directly or indirectly unless by permission n or license from the superintendent of I 1 indian affairs the indian agent or subagent sub agent arent and every license to trade with the indians in this territory L errit ory is hereby revoked 3 and e very every person to whom the opportunity offers offer s is is i required to notify pass passing in i g emigrants and non residents of this procla nution so far as trading with or aiding indians is concerned I 1 and forthwith report to to the nearest civil or military officer every case of departure from the most rigid compliance with this prohibition and revocation I 1 ath As small and large war parties of in deans are constantly prowling about watching for unguarded points let all who go into kanyon or any retired places go go armed and in sufficient numbers to be safe and all ah axe are r required e to be constantly on tw alert and all officers must preserve order der and carry out the orders and regulations which have been and may hereafter be given since the commencement of indian hostilities and enforce the same when necessary ath heavy expenses have already been incurred incurred by the inhabitants of this territory in defending themselves against hostile indians and much property has been lost and destroyed and such will continue to be cie ielase case until hostilities tili ties cease therefore officers of every grade graae when on duty are required to keep an accurate account of all services performed and expenses incurred under their he ir commands on account of hostile indians or other ml avil disposed persons whether residents or pon non residents and promptly forward the saing samo to the office of tho the tj I 1 overn or 0 and of indian affairs in testimony whereof I 1 have hereunto set my hand caused the seal of said aid territory to be IL L S affixed at great salt lake city 1 this nineteenth day of august I 1 1 in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and afif ty three and of the independence of the united states of america the seventy eighth by the khe governor BRIGHAM YOUNG RICHARDS seery pro tm appointed by the th governor |
